Quarterly filer? Your GST/HST quarter closes today. Your return and payment are due October 31. πŸ“…

That's the bit people miss: monthly and quarterly filers file and pay one month after the reporting period ends. It isn't file now, pay later. Both land on the same date, which is why a return that's technically "done" can still cost you interest.

Four things worth doing in the next few weeks:

🧾 Reconcile your sales. Match invoices to your books before you total anything. Finding a discrepancy now is a correction; finding it after filing is an amendment.

🏷️ Claim your ITCs. Input tax credits on business costs are the part most owners leave money on. If your receipts aren't organised, you're almost certainly under-claiming.

πŸ’³ Plan the payment. Know the number early enough to have the cash ready. GST/HST isn't really your money β€” you collected it on the CRA's behalf β€” but it's very easy to spend it by accident when it's sitting in your operating account.

πŸ“ Keep the records. Receipts back up every claim you make. That matters at filing time and it matters a great deal more if anyone ever asks questions.

And if you're an annual filer, your date is different: generally three months after your fiscal year-end. Worth confirming which one you actually are β€” plenty of owners aren't sure.

Don't let the deadline sneak up. We'll file it for you.

Most CRA audits aren't random β€” they follow patterns. 🚩 Swipe for the five that get noticed most.

Repeated losses Β· Big income swings Β· Heavy cash Β· Above-average deductions Β· Late filings

None of these means you did something wrong. Real businesses tick these boxes all the time. What separates a quick answer from a long one is whether you can explain it with documents.

An audit isn't a verdict. It's a check.

The CRA changed how you register a business, and most people haven't noticed. 🏒

Since July 14, Business Registration Online only opens from inside a CRA account. No account, no registration β€” so identity verification now comes first.

And if you've never filed a Canadian return, or haven't filed in two years, you may need Form RC1 on paper instead.

Business number, GST/HST, payroll, import/export β€” we'll set it up properly the first time.

Q4 is here. Which means your year-end starts now, not in April. πŸ“…

Here's the part most business owners learn the hard way: almost everything that shapes this year's tax bill has to happen before December 31. By the time you're sitting down with your accountant in the spring, the year is closed. You're not planning any more β€” you're reporting.

Three things worth sorting before the year closes:

βœ… Get the books caught up. You can't make a decision about December if you don't know what happened in July. This is the one that blocks everything else.

βœ… Review pay and dividends. Salary versus dividends, and how much of each, is a decision with a deadline. It affects your corporate tax, your personal tax, your RRSP room and your CPP. It cannot be fixed retroactively.

βœ… Time your purchases. If you're planning to buy equipment, when you buy can matter as much as what you buy β€” especially with the new Productivity Mega Deduction on the table for assets acquired on or after September 15.

Then the calendar takes over:
πŸ”Ή Dec 31 β€” year-end for calendar-year corporations
πŸ”Ή End of February β€” T4 and T4A slips due
πŸ”Ή 2–3 months after year-end β€” corporate balance owing
πŸ”Ή 6 months after year-end β€” T2 return due

In January, the options are gone. In October, you still have all of them.

Book a year-end review.

Buying equipment? You could write off 100% of it in year one. 🏭

On September 15, 2026, the federal government introduced the Productivity Mega Deduction, a proposed measure that would let businesses immediately deduct the full cost of most eligible capital property instead of spreading it over years through capital cost allowance.

What makes it notable:

βœ… Immediate: the full cost could be deducted in the year you acquire the asset.
βœ… Broad: it covers most capital property under the CCA rules, including machinery, equipment, computers, technology, tools, furniture and fixtures.
βœ… Permanent: it's proposed as an ongoing measure, not a limited-time window.
πŸ“… Timing: it applies to eligible property acquired on or after September 15, 2026.

What's generally not included: buildings, goodwill and licences, and certain vehicles.

Two things to know before you buy:
πŸ”Ή It's a proposal, not yet law. Draft legislation has been released, but the final rules could still change.
πŸ”Ή If you're a sole proprietor or in a partnership, there are proposed rules limiting how much the deduction can create or increase a loss. Structure matters.

Timing, ownership and which asset class a purchase falls into can all change the result. So if a big purchase is on your list, talk to us before you buy.

"Your books are a mess." Said with dread, usually about two weeks after a CRA notice arrives. πŸ“‚

Here's the thing about being behind: it doesn't get better on its own, and every month you wait adds another month to the pile. Meanwhile you're running a business on numbers you don't trust.

Send us the mess. Get back a clean set of books.

βœ… Caught up, however far behind you are. Two months or two years β€” we've seen worse than yours, and we don't need you to tidy it first.
βœ… Quoted in writing, before we start. No open-ended hourly surprise at the end.
βœ… Monthly close after that β€” capture, reconcile, comply, report. Every account, every month, so you never end up here again.

And if a CRA letter is what brought you here: bring that too. Responding properly is a lot easier with books that are actually finished.

The hardest part is the phone call. The rest is our job.

Five accounting mistakes quietly costing Canadian business owners money. πŸ‘‰ Swipe.

Mixing business and personal spending Β· Leaving the books until tax season Β· Watching profit instead of cash flow Β· Missing GST/HST deadlines Β· Deciding on gut feel instead of numbers

Profitable businesses run out of cash all the time. That's not a tax problem β€” it's a visibility problem.

Which one are you guilty of? πŸ‘‡

Tariffs hit your margins. There may be funding to help you respond.

If your business has been squeezed by trade pressures β€” higher input costs, disrupted supply chains, orders that don't pencil out any more β€” you may not have to absorb it alone.

The Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), delivered by FedDev Ontario, supports tariff-impacted businesses in southern Ontario with non-repayable funding for things like:

βš™οΈ Investing in new equipment
πŸ“ˆ Improving productivity
πŸ”— Diversifying supply chains
πŸ‘₯ Strengthening business operations

Two streams are available: liquidity support for businesses under immediate financial pressure, and project funding for pivots that improve competitiveness.

A few things worth knowing before you apply:
πŸ”Ή There's a minimum annual revenue threshold β€” this program is aimed at established businesses
πŸ”Ή You'll need to show a genuine tariff impact, not just general cost pressure
πŸ”Ή Applications need proper financial documentation, which is where most businesses get stuck

That last part is what we do. We'll tell you honestly whether you're likely to qualify before you invest time in an application β€” and if you are, we'll help you put the financials together properly.

Don't leave potential funding opportunities on the table.

Eligibility criteria apply. Program details are set by FedDev Ontario and subject to change β€” we'll help you confirm whether your business qualifies.

Business questions don't wait for your next appointment.

A client wants different payment terms. You're about to sign a lease. Someone asks whether you should incorporate. A CRA letter shows up on a Tuesday. These moments don't schedule themselves around quarter-end β€” and "I'll ask my accountant next time I see them" usually means guessing now and finding out later whether you guessed right.

Accountant On Call gives you access to professional accounting support when the question actually comes up:

πŸ’¬ Accounting questions
πŸ’° Tax matters
πŸ“„ Financial reporting
πŸ“ˆ Business decisions

Same expertise. More convenience. Get the financial guidance you need β€” without the overhead of a full-time accountant.
