Child care is more than a support for families—it’s an investment in Ontario’s economy.

A new economic analysis by Dr. Jim Stanford from the Centre for Future Work shows that expanding affordable, high-quality child care has already delivered significant economic benefits for Ontario. The report highlights stronger economic growth, increased labour force participation, new jobs in the child care sector, and billions of dollars in additional provincial revenue.

At the same time, the report emphasizes that continued investment is needed to expand licensed child care spaces, strengthen the early childhood education workforce, and achieve the goal of affordable child care for all Ontario families.

Ontario's early childhood education workforce continues to grow.
The College of Early Childhood Educators has released preliminary 2025–26 registration figures, showing a record 8,615 applications and 7,939 newly approved RECEs—an encouraging sign as Ontario continues to expand licensed child care.
While the increase in new applicants is positive, retaining qualified educators remains just as important to building a strong, sustainable child care system.

The City of Toronto has announced new funding to support licensed School Age child care programs in 2026. The investment will help operators offset operating costs, support new fee subsidy placements, and maintain high-quality programming for children aged 6–12.
