A little money rant about money words

“Oil was $100 then. Oil is $100 now. So why is gas more expensive?”
Pierre Poilievre and Bernie Sanders are pointing at the same basic comparison, then blaming very different reasons for it. But before we blame windfall profits, taxes, carbon pricing, or any single factor, we need to separate two questions:

1. Are gas prices higher in affordability terms?

For that, you need to adjust gas prices for inflation. Once you do, the examples cited by both politicians look much less dramatic.

2. Is gasoline more expensive relative to crude oil than it used to be?

That’s a legitimate question. But it still doesn’t automatically prove who, or what, is responsible.

The pump price also reflects refining costs and margins, inventories, distribution, labour costs, taxes, exchange rates, and geopolitical risk.

That last one matters a lot right now. The recent spike is happening against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East and disruption and risk around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints.

The better question is: what changed between the barrel and the pump?
