Voltage-gated sodium (Nav) channels transmit pain signals along nerve fibers in the peripheral nervous system. Because Nav channels are outside of the brain and spinal cord, they are being explored as potential targets for a new class of non-opioid pain medicine. Drugs designed to target Nav channels prevent them from opening, thereby stopping pain signals from being transmitted.
