Join us at the Goethe‑Institut Toronto for the Canadian premiere of The Conference of Trees by Christina Kubisch.

Part sound installation, part listening experience, The Conference of Trees invites visitors to engage with nature in an entirely new way. Five bonsai trees, each with its own unique soundscape, create an immersive environment where listening becomes an act of discovery.

Originally conceived in 1988 as a response to environmental destruction and political indifference toward nature, Kubisch's installation transforms field recordings into whispers, rustles, songs, and murmurs, encouraging us to reflect on our relationship with the natural world.

Through sound, space and participation, The Conference of Trees invites visitors to slow down, listen closely and experience nature from a new perspective.

This year's winners of the High School German Contests in Ontario and Manitoba, Emily from University of Toronto Schools and Caio from River East Collegiate, had a fantastic time at a two-week youth camp at the Alpine Centre Obertauern in Salzburger Land, sponsored by the Goethe-Institut.

It was a unique opportunity to meet and connect with German learners from all over the world, improve their language skills, experience Austrian culture and enjoy the breathtaking Alpine landscape.

Congratulations, Emily and Caio! ⛰

What makes you stronger in the face of challenges?

Goethe asked artist Lisa Hirmer (Canada/Germany/Mexico) to think about the guiding question of the Goethe-Institut Toronto’s year-long project (re)Open Minds: Adapting to the Future.

Throughout the year, we are sharing Lisa’s seasonal images and thoughts as impulses to consider our own cultural resilience in times of converging crises.

☝Let us know where and how you draw strengths.

Lisa Hirmer:
🌃“From nocturnal ecologies I’ve learned about strength that comes from the quiet, the tiny, and the barely seen. In a world that privileges the brightly lit, the vision-centred, the human-oriented, spending time in the dark of night reveals a world full of ultraviolet vision, ultrasonic communications, and scent-perception sensitive to single molecules. It is not a world of deprivation but rather something richly alive and essential to the health of diurnal ecologies. A reminder that strength is not always easily seen.”

Lisa Hirmer is an artist concerned with the collective nature of being. Spanning photography, sculpture, installation, social practice, community collaboration and writing, her work explores collective relationships both within human communities and between humans and the more-than-human-world. Her work has been shown at Art Gallery of Ontario, Queens Museum, Flux Factory, and many more, and she has held residencies with Arts House Melbourne, Santa Fe Art Institute, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation among others.
