New job? New country? New workplace culture?

Suddenly everyone is saying things like:
💬 “Let’s circle back.”
💬 “Can you take this offline?”
💬 “Happy to connect!”
..and you're just trying to figure out what any of that means. 😅

✔️ Observe before you jump in
✔️ Ask questions (yes, even the ones you think are obvious)
✔️ Learn the unwritten workplace rules
✔️ Find your people and build connections
✔️ Remember that confidence comes with time

Here's your reminder: Nobody expects you to know everything on Day 1. Every colleague you admire was once the new person trying to remember names and navigate awkward introductions.

Be curious. Be open. Be yourself.
What's the most confusing workplace phrase you've heard? Tell us below! 👇

If your job search feels slow or frustrating, this data helps explain why.

Many skilled immigrants are not immediately placed in roles that match their education, not because they lack ability, but because experience is often evaluated differently in the Canadian job market. With gaps in job matching and earnings still present, the challenge is not talent, it is translation, visibility, and access to opportunity.

But this also means something important for jobseekers:
You are not defined by early outcomes in your job search. Progress often comes through small, consistent actions, refining how you present your experience, expanding your network, and staying intentional in your applications.

What you can do right now:

✔ Translate international experience into local relevance
✔ Focus on skills, not just job titles
✔ Use informational interviews to learn how roles are really filled
✔ Stay consistent even when results feel slow
✔ Keep building experience in parallel paths (contract, volunteering, projects)

Real talk from a recruiter: We don't read your 5-paragraph cover letter. We only scan for 2 specific things:
1. Do you know anything about OUR company?
2. Why do you want THIS specific role?

Bad: "I'm a hard worker with great skills..."
Good: "I've followed [Company]'s work in [specific area]. Your recent [project] aligns with my experience in [skill]."

See the difference?

Pro tip: Keep it to 3-4 sentences max. Make it specific, relevant, and easy to read!

Is your resume getting noticed, or just getting scanned and skipped? ⏱️
Most resumes don’t get rejected because people lack experience, but because they aren’t structured in a way that’s easy to quickly understand.

✓Your most important points should be instantly visible, especially in headings and early words of each bullet.
✓Instead of making broad claims about your skills, back them with specific micro-proof examples
✓Place your strongest achievements in the middle sections of your resume so you keep the reader engaged beyond the first glance
✓Always tailor your resume to match the job description, reflecting the language, priorities, and skills the employer is actually looking for.
✓Strengthen clarity by grouping similar skills together, which helps recruiters quickly understand your areas of expertise
✓Highlight transferable skills from volunteer work, freelance projects, or unrelated roles that still demonstrate your capabilities.

To mark the 30th anniversary milestone, we asked the faces who make Career Edge what it is and to share what this work means to them. What they said is honest, specific, and sometimes surprising. Across different roles, different years of tenure, and different reasons for joining, a common thread emerged: this is work that gets under your skin in the best way. You come for the mission and stay because of the people, both the ones you help and the ones you work beside.
