The honest answer may surprise some people.

After many conversations with respected professionals outside Canada, one perception continues to surface: Canada remains behind many of its international counterparts in close protection.

That is not an attack on Canadian professionals. It is a challenge to our industry.

An agency licence may allow a company to offer protective services, but it does not automatically establish close protection competency.

Looking professional in a suit, remaining alert and being aware are important foundations. But experienced professionals recognize the difference immediately.

They see it in movement, positioning, communication, terminology, advance work, protective formations, team coordination and decision-making under pressure.

Those abilities cannot be imitated. They are developed through credible training, mentorship, repetition and operational experience.

This becomes especially important during major events such as the Toronto International Film Festival. Many high-profile individuals will receive protection. Some teams will be trained, tested and validated. Others may simply look the part.

If nothing happens, weaknesses may never be exposed. But when an incident occurs, everyone quickly discovers who was truly prepared.
