Few instruments can match the violin’s extraordinary combination of brilliance, agility, and expressive power. 
This Encounters event will showcase all that the violin can offer, featuring violinists Judith Fliedl, visiting from Austria on a Canadian tour, and Toronto-based violinist Roan Ma, performing a world premiere for violin duet by André Ristic, commissioned by Soundstreams. The program will also include works by John Beckwith, Chris Paul Harman, Parisa Sabet, and Ana Sokolovič. A discussion and audience Q&A with Fliedl and Ma will follow the performance.

THE SCOOP | Composer Cecilia Livingston Has Won The 2026 Harry Freedman Award - Classical FM The Canadian Music Centre has announced that Cecilia Livingston’s work “Lament” has won the 2026 Harry Freedman Award.

Soundstreams’ Bridges: Emerging Composers Program is an annual week-long tuition-free program that brings together celebrated mentors, a professional resident ensemble, and six emerging composers from around the world to each develop and premiere a new work, presented as part of Soundstreams’ main stage concert series in Toronto, ON.

Each participant will receive a $1,000 honorarium for composing their new work and free accommodation in Toronto for the duration of the workshop.

The opening Encounters of the season compliments the first mainstage show of the season (Celebrating Steve Reich at 90) by featuring Reich’s “Mallet Quartet” (originally co-commissioned by Soundstreams) and “Nagoya Marimbas.” The program also includes Ann Southam’s “Glass House #5”, and “VV” by Juri Seo. “Nagoya Marimbas” is a fast-paced percussion duet frequently paired with contemporary ballet and modern choreography, and for this Encounters, renowned choreographer Heidi Strauss has crafted a world premiere solo dance piece for contemporary dance artist Aerin Cho that echoes the intricate specificity of the piece. This immersive Encounters will be performed in the round.

Steve Reich, hailed by The New York Times as “our greatest living composer,” celebrates his 90th birthday with the North American premiere of "In All Your Ways", co-commissioned by Soundstreams and leading international partners. The program also features "Music for 18 Musicians" and "Clapping Music", including a unique performance with Reich on film alongside Russell Hartenberger live on stage.
