Meet The Crew: Jaedyn, One of The 2026 Quetico Foundation Summer Research Team

“As the biology intern for the Quetico Foundation, I will be shadowing the Park Biologist this summer, giving me a wonderful opportunity to grow my skills. I am studying environmental science at the University of Waterloo and am very passionate about working outdoors. Growing up in Northern Ontario, I would spend time camping in Quetico Provincial Park, so having the opportunity to come back and explore the beautiful park while contributing to its ecological integrity and conservation is very meaningful to me. This summer, you might see me in the campground, where I’ll be working on a turtle nest protection project to help increase nesting success of Painted and Snapping turtles. Be sure to look out for turtles within the Dawson Trail Campground and report nesting activity to staff!”

Our Turtle Nest Protection program has officially begun, with our first turtle nest
protector (at the feet of Quetico Foundation Summer Researcher Jaedyn) being put in place on June 9th! This is an exciting step in attempting to increase nesting success by protecting turtle eggs from predation. We will be running this program throughout the summer, so keep an eye out for more updates.

The Quetico Foundation's Summer Research team recently switched from deploying bird call recording devices across the park to performing lake water sampling and observations. Shown here, photo 1️⃣ Lowen deploying a water sample collection device in a remote Quetico lake (with improvised rock weight!), and 2️⃣ Spencer recording observations on water transparency/turbidity.

This data will help identify changes in water quality overtime.

The 2026 Quetico Foundation Summer Research team is now on site and has started our planned list of summer projects! One such project is the continuation of a long term Quetico Park specific Song Bird study, which dates back to 2014. In the month of May, the team (Lowen and Jaden in the first two photos, with Spencer centre in the third) deployed a set of Autonomous Recording Units at 17 different locations in the park. These will be collected back for processing at the end of the summer.

Quetico has some of the best little out-of-the-way cafés that I've encountered on my travels. They often have nice views by the water, and there's rarely a problem finding seating!
