"This week, I am officially wrapping up my six-month sabbatical and returning to my role as Chief Correspondent at Reuters in Copenhagen.

Taking this time off was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was fortunate enough to do some incredible traveling with my family across Brazil and the United States. And I just wrapped up my first solo-travelling in years: hiking 100 kilometers alone through the Swiss Alps.

But the real reason for this break wasn’t the travel. It was family. A while back, my youngest child told me: "You work too much. I want to spend more time with you."

From that moment, there was no doubt in my mind about what I needed to do. I had managed to save some money, and instead of buying "stuff," I decided to invest it in time.

Huge thanks to my wife and to Reuters for supporting me and giving me this opportunity to pause.

Ironically, as someone who has spent half my life in journalism, I have consumed almost zero news over the last six months. I completely disconnected from the screens and the non-stop news cycle to take a deep breath.

Lately, people have asked if this break made me rethink my professional life. Happily, the time away only confirmed what I already knew deep down: I love my job. I feel incredibly privileged to delve into the stories that really matter and communicate them to the world. At a time when trust in traditional media is falling, I have realized that my job to create understanding of the time we live in, is of great importance. I am returning to work with a clear head."
