Simon Paré-Poupart begins Trash!, a memoir of his years as a garbage collector, by explaining why he started swearing again. He had promised religious friends he would stop taking the Lord’s name in vain. Then one day, he jumped off the truck and found eighteen overloaded contractor bags wedged between two badly parked cars. They were stuffed with construction debris and nails. If he hurt himself carrying them, that would be his fault. If he scratched either car squeezing back through the gap, that would also be his fault. The homeowner, meanwhile, watched from behind the curtains.

Artificial intelligence (AI) covers a broad range of technologies. But there is only one that dominates the news and financial markets – the multimodal generative AI systems produced by leading tech companies, in particular, ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), Grok (xAI), Copilot (Microsoft), and Llama (Meta). Tech leaders are all in on this type of AI because of its potential to secure them great wealth and political power. It also happens to be the type that is most threatening to our well-being, although not for the reasons commonly given by tech leaders and echoed by most media.

The official reason for the march was to put pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to advance settlement construction in Gaza, which Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich promised in June would happen “as soon as the prime minister gives his approval.” But the event also intended to demonstrate who is in charge, who stands above the law and can get what they want — as they have already done in East Jerusalem and the West Bank — with or without the prime minister.

On 16 July, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio convened representatives from 65 countries for a ministerial meeting on the “resurgence of political terrorism.” He warned the meeting that the left was an “encroaching darkness.” His colleague Stephen Miller called “left-wing extremism” a “fatal cancer to civilisation” and denounced leftists as motivated by “envy, hatred, jealousy.” Rubio promised to dismantle its international networks “brick by brick.”

Washington’s Red Scare unveiled another weapon four days later, as the State Department published a 100-page report titled “Cuba: The Capital of 21st Century Communism”. The report listed a litany of grievances against the Cuban Revolution, accusing it of waging a “war of attrition” against the United States that “has yielded remarkable success.”

We study migratory birds as scientists. With an international group of colleagues, we just published a comprehensive assessment of the status, threats and conservation efforts involving more than 3,380 of Earth’s migratory bird species.

The results are sobering. We found that more than half of the world’s migratory bird species are declining because of an array of threats, including habitat loss, invasive species that harm birds, collisions with buildings, hunting, the pet trade, toxic pesticides and, in some cases, being caught in commercial fishing nets.

On 7 July 2026, the Irish Parliament officially passed the ‘Israeli Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (Prohibition of Importation of Goods) Bill 2026.’ The Bill bans the import of goods into Ireland originating from Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT).
