CUSTOM CUT — PPF TRIMMING TECHNIQUE

Cutting is probably one of the most important skills in PPF installation, especially when it comes to custom work.

With custom installation, the film is intentionally left oversized, trimmed, wrapped around edges, and in many cases, parts of the vehicle are removed to achieve the cleanest possible finish.

Learning how to control the blade and developing a proper “knife feel” can save you a huge amount of time while making your installations cleaner, safer, and more efficient.

There are 3 main cutting techniques we teach:

• Cutting on the panel
• Cutting behind the panel
• Cutting between panels

In this video, we focus on cutting behind the panel — one of the most commonly used techniques in custom PPF installation.

Typically, we leave around 1/2 inch of extra material and wrap it behind the panel whenever access allows.

The key is learning how to make a clean, straight cut while the film is still lifted, before wrapping it behind the edge. Many installers wrap the film first and then trim the excess afterward. Mastering the cut before wrapping eliminates that extra step and can save a significant amount of time throughout a full installation.

PPF APPLICATION , EVERY STEP MATTERS 🛡️

Applying PPF to a properly prepared panel may look simple, but there are several key techniques you need to understand to get a clean, professional result.

Once the film is placed on the panel with slip solution, it can move freely. To lock it into position, we flush the soap from underneath the film with an alcohol/tack solution, especially around the corners.

One important technique: before introducing alcohol solution, we recommend pushing out some of the water first. This helps prevent the alcohol from traveling too far underneath the film and creating unnecessary tack where you still need movement.

Stretching is just as important.
The film needs to be stretched correctly depending on the shape of the panel. Your goal is to distribute tension properly and minimize fingers. And even if small fingers remain that’s not necessarily a problem. You just need to know how to work with them.

But everything starts with PREPARATION.

If the vehicle and panel aren’t properly prepared, even perfect installation technique won’t give you the result you want.

Preparation. Positioning. Stretching. Tack. Corners. Squeegee technique. Final inspection.

Every step matters.

That’s exactly what we teach during our PPF Training with a strong focus on hands-on practice, because watching someone install PPF and actually doing it yourself are two completely different things.
