💥BLAST FROM THE PAST!

Talk about a surprise throw back in time to one of our medical needs kitties! While at Kahu AH with Hollyberry, we ran into Bentley and his mama!

BENTLEY was and still is just one of the sweetest, lovebug kitties you could meet! His issue was a terrible gut causing ongoing stinky diarrhea and he struggled with maintaining his weight too as a result. Bentley was sitting in a shelter which was no place for a guy dealing with his kind of gut issues.

It took a very special person stepping up to foster this sweetheart. Someone who wasn't phased by his p**p challenges - which actually turned out to be more challenging than we bargained for!

His mom, Devin, started fostering him and despite his p**py pants (think one of our Milton's p**pocalypses that never sees an end, lol), she fell head over paws in love with this guy. I honestly couldn't blame her. He was such a lovely boy. She adopted Bentley, p**py pants and all - as he was just one of those guys who would improve, but only so far and there was no rhyme or reason behind it at that point. It was just him and his roller coaster gut.

Life is funny sometimes. This trio has popped into mind a couple of times recently. I say trio because of Nina, Bentley's girlfriend who he met as fellow foster kitties in their mom's home (Nina kind of claimed Bentley as her guy, lol). And *p**f* suddenly, we ran into each other yesterday! 💜

It was great to see Bentley doing so well and looking so great!! 💖 It was also nice to catch up with his mama!

It's not always easy to find forever homes for some of these medical cats, but Bentley definitely scored when he found his foster mom turned forever and ever mom. He is adored by his mama and everyone who knows him.❤️

⚕️HOLLYBERRY had a long day yesterday and felt pretty crappy. It has been stressful and worrisome to see her so abnormally cooperative with everything.😔

When we rechecked her belly on ultrasound in the evening, what was seen earlier in the day, and noted as a possible foreign body via radiology report, was not seen the second time around. Based on that, and the fact that her blood work remained unchanged, it was felt that whatever was there has moved on its own heading in the right direction towards the exit door.

Our vet recommended that we monitor and see how she does today at home. If something is working its way out through her colon, monitoring and giving it time to leave on its own is the least invasive way to support Hollyberry at this point.

We have paused her medications. She was given an anti-nausea injection before heading home and today, we monitor closely.

She's been up/down so far. Some appetite, but not quite her normal yet. Signs of possible nausea still showing, as she goes back and forth to her food dish without eating, but then returns for a few bites at any given time.

Hollyberry has been a bit restless, wandering her foster home from room to room, but then also seems to settle for short periods, hanging out with her foster mom.

While definitely not out of the woods yet, we are hoping we've at least managed to somehow evade surgery.

We'll see how today continues to unfold. And if things are not fully back to normal, get her back into the clinic tomorrow for further reassessment. Hoping to avoid an emergency visit today, but also aware that it may be needed.

📷 - the pic of her on the chair was taken yesterday - she was so quiet. Just slept on my lap for hours until my bladder was gonna burst and then slept in this position until her second ultrasound and blood work recheck was done. It's hard to see them feel so crappy and have no real clarity as to the cause.

I'm not a fan of the unknown and uncertainty of how things will unfold, but this is pretty much where we're at. We're at the mercy of however her body is handling whatever is going on. 🙏🏻

⚕️MIRACLE MAUDE MEDICAL UPDATE:

OMG!!! Can I just start by saying that last night, I had such a swell of emotions internally that it felt like I was a bubbling pot about to spill over, but I couldn't figure out where to place all my feelings - so I cried.🤣 And then I hopped around and did a small jig and grinned from ear to ear. 🤷🏻‍♀️😁

Let me start by saying - Maude is not yet out of her woods.

✨BUT - the path she is walking is definitely headed in the rightest of right directions!!!

I had brought Maude in last night with Nikki because I wanted to see if darbopoetin injections would help with her anemia. Just in case she also was dealing with FeLV in her bone marrow (which we can't confirm unless we take a sample and we just aren't going to do that invasive a test).

First, her exam confirmed her ear infection is all cleared up - YAY! No more ear medication needed.

Next, between the vet and I, we didn't see her looking as obviously anemic as she had before. So, it was recommended to do a PCV test to see how she's doing.

And our Miracle Maude's (cuz she's a definite miracle kitty) red blood cell numbers went from 13 to 20 all on her own steam with all her medications and supplements supports in place and this difference was in just a week from her last blood work done!!!!🎉🎉🎉 Nobody can definitively explain what's happening with her, but everyone including the Kahu team, are definitely cheering her on the whole way through!

What we do know is that there's a chance she doesn't have cancer and possibly just an immune mediated response to something that is being treated and things are just working for her. And still, she could have cancer. Who knows. And honestly, whatever her future holds, her life has already been made brighter and more filled with love than she's had in a long time.

So, I'm not great at taking compliments or acknowledging my success because I usually balance them with things I don't feel that I do right or well enough. I've gotten better at accepting them without reminding myself of my weak points (of which I have many, lol), but I def. still have work to do.

With Miracle Maude - I feel myself wanting to actually pat myself on the back and tell myself what an excellent job I've done. Thanking myself for sticking to my gut. For listening to Maude when she gave me that look of "what do you mean what do I want to do? Just support me!".

I'm just so happy with how she's been doing. To pet her and no longer feel like we're petting a skeleton - show now weighs 2.94kg! Nearly 3kg!!! She's gaining weight daily.💜

I'm basically a proud rescuer mama of our sweet walking dead Miracle Maude. To think her life may have ended too soon - that we would have missed this slow, but sure miracle transition of hers - I can't even.

Maude is a reminder to us that looking at the whole picture beyond the tests - really seeing where the animal is at in their own energy and will to live - that too, counts for something. Whether she continues to be palliative in care or she finds her way out of that bubble and into just living life for many years to come - this girl has already been enjoying her new life filled with love, support, toys, attention and everything she needs to keep going for as long as she wants and is able.

I have zero regrets. I am over the moon. I can sleep at night. I don't have the "what ifs" haunting me. I am so proud of our Miracle Maude. I'm also so incredibly proud of and grateful for her foster mom, who has been so dedicated to following every bit of instruction about her care and medication/supplement/feeding routine and just loves her to bits.❤️

Rescue is never really a one person show.

⚕️NIKKI MEDICAL VISIT:

Nikki headed into Kahu AH for her urinalysis and to begin her darbopoetin injections which help her red blood cells replenish and improve her anemia.

In the process of her exam, we felt a mass that we weren't entirely sure what it was or where it randomly came from - so, we drew some fluid from it and confirmed it is just a fatty pocket - huge relief because she didn't have this a month ago! 😸

Nikki had lost some weight at her last cet visit, but last night, we were happy to see that she's regaining her weight back. It took some playing around with her food textures and flavours, but she's been back on track and eating well.

Over all, Nikki is our go-go-go girl with what appears to be a bit of dementia starting as she's been randomly vocalizing and sometimes getting briefly stuck when the stoopid wall doesn't wanna move out of her way. I guess we all reach that point at some point. Still, she's mostly just doing her senior thang and enjoying her snuggles with her foster mom, being a food monitor for her housemates and napping.

And we're waiting on her urinalysis results.

⚕️HOLLYBERRY MEDICAL UPDATE:

We aren't 100% certain what was causing Hollyberry to feel so sh*tty, but our vet suspects it has to do with her kidneys moving into stage 2 kidney disease. It was the only change we could definitively see as possibly impacting her.

We did x-rays, urinalysis, blood work, ultrasound, a bum poke to check for additional stool. Kidneys aside, all else looked normal. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The vocalizing and looking out of sorts, which was new for her - this was likely related to her kidneys not processing her higher dosage of gabapentin given in anticipation of her vet exam.

We've changed her medication, stopped her onsior which can be hard on the kidneys and we will work on some more weight loss as she has gained a bit due to increased senior nap times and not enough exercise. Her weight really impacts both her bowel function and arthritis.

With the multiple vet conversations happening at once about Hollyberry, Maude and Nikki last night, I forgot to follow up about starting Hollyberry on cisapride to help with what I suspect is an early mild motility change, partly due to age and partly due to weight. I'll be reaching out to get that sorted out for her. The extra restorolax given on Thursday night at least helped push out her sluggish p**p.😅

*Pic is Hollyberry donating her urine for a urinalysis. Hollyberry ended up costing just over $600 (I think it was $656 something). Altogether, last night was basically just over $1,000 including Nikki and Maude).

Random question - Would anyone want to weirdly donate to match what last night cost which would then give Chudley funds for his cancer surgery? The actual total spent, now that I'm asking this random question, was $1,098.89.

This cuddle bug is so ready for her forever home. She's just a sweetheart. A little shy to start and takes her time to warm up, but then her switch flips and she's the lap cat everyone always dreams of. 💞
