Another Building Code Quiz - Openable Windows and Required Guards
Based on the 2024 Ontario Building Code and the 2020 National Building Code of Canada. Remember, you are looking for the most correct answer.
A residential subdivision consisting of 24 detached dwellings are being construction in an Ontario municipality. They are 2 storeys in building height, with 3 m ceiling heights on the first floor, allowing for large windows to be designed. The windows are casement type opening the full height of the window. The bottom edge of the window is 800 mm above the finished floor, (see photo with dimension A in green colour).
The purchaser wants the windows to be capable of opening fully to maximize the fresh air into the dwelling. To satisfy the purchaser and allow the window to swing fully open, what is required?
A - Dimension B (red in colour) must be less than 1800 mm above the ground
B - The window is required to be 900 mm above the finished floor, the window must be raised
C - A guard is required to be installed on the exterior of the window
D - A mechanism must be installed to limit the unobstructed opening to not more than 100 mm
The correct answer will be posted in a couple of weeks with the Building Code reference. Have fun.

Now Available: Intent Statements for the 2020 National Model Codes
The Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) has released the Intent Statements supplement to the 2020 National Model Codes. These documents explain the rationale behind requirements in the Codes and support code users in interpreting and applying acceptable solutions.
The Intent Statements also help code users understand what alternative solutions must meet. These statements are a resource for professionals who rely on the Codes for design, construction, enforcement, and compliance.
The Intent Statements are available to view or download for free by visiting the NRC’s Publications Archive.
More information about the code development process and the CBHCC can be found on the CBHCC’s website.
