Since his youth, Harold Town had been fascinated by history and mythology. He explored the allegorical elements of classical myths in his “God” series:

“God Series #12” (mixed media on paper, 1972) sees the centaur Chiron as he instructs Achilles. Chiron was known to be an educator and taught Achilles the skills he needed to become a man.

“Cadmus Slaying a Dragon” (mixed media on paper, 1976) depicts Grecian hero Cadmus, the original dragon slayer, in the midst of his pivotal battle, a moment that would ultimately lead to his establishment of the city of Thebes.

“Toy Horse” (mixed media on paper, 1976) isn’t from the “God” series, but the horse’s bold, exaggerated form and whimsical detailing arguably shares inspiration with the classical myths depicted in those works.

Celebrating Takao Tanabe’s 100th birthday today! 🥳 Despite the hardships, and degradation of having been detained in an internment camp during WWII, he would rise to become one of Canada’s most accomplished artists of the 20th century.

Tanabe’s career is marked by his evolution and experimentation with both style and subject matter. This early painting serves as a vigorous example of his abstract work in the late ‘50s. Here, a neutral board hosts bold, frenetic strokes that fill the picture plane, alternating between linear slashes and smooth contours.

Known as one of Canada’s most acclaimed and notorious multidisciplinary artists, Kent Monkman has developed an instantly recognizable aesthetic that hijacks and qu**rs Canadian colonial images.
Prior to executing one of his large scale paintings, Monkman will create precise preparatory drawings. As most of his canvases are in major public collections, works on paper like “The Examination” (watercolor and gouache, 2008) are highly sought-after.
