VINCENZO PIETROPAOLO - " In Calabria (southern Italy), centuries old olive trees dominate the landscape. Every time I visit, they evoke countless childhood memories: farmers seeking respite from the hot sun under their canopies, the banter and laughter of a harvest meal, and the sacredness symbolized by their branches.

Closer to home, the arboreal ancients are replaced by the towering maples and oaks of the urban forest of Toronto. The trees of Toronto portrayed in this exhibition were standing well before the arrival of European settlers."

RAFAEL GOLDCHAIN: "My interest in farm buildings began when I moved to Port Hope, Ontario, three years ago. Within minutes of the town, the landscape opens onto farmland, where barns appear in a variety of forms. Their shapes, materials, and state of repair reflect the history of settlement, agricultural practise, and changing urban life.

From timber-frame structures to more recent metal buildings, these barns embody both function and adaptation. As photographic subjects, they offer an opportunity to explore vernacular architecture within the agricultural landscape, while attending to shape, texture, colour, and the changing quality of light."
