What does trauma actually do to your nervous system? 🧠🌿
Trauma can affect much more than how you remember an experience. It can influence how your brain and nervous system respond to stress, safety, relationships, and everyday situations.
You may notice yourself:
• Feeling constantly on edge or hypervigilant
• Overthinking or anticipating danger
• Becoming easily overwhelmed
• Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
• Avoiding certain situations or conversations
• Struggling to relax, even when things are going well
• Automatically going into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses
These responses aren't signs that you're “too sensitive.” They can be ways your nervous system learned to protect you after overwhelming or traumatic experiences.
Trauma therapy can help you understand these patterns and work toward greater emotional and nervous system regulation.
At Green Path Psychotherapy, we provide trauma-specialized therapy in Toronto, including EMDR therapy, somatic therapy, and trauma-focused psychotherapy, with both in-person and virtual options.
You don't have to wait until you're in crisis to seek support.

What if your “overreaction” isn’t an overreaction at all?
Sometimes, what feels like an intense emotional response may be your nervous system responding to a perceived threat, ESPECIALLY if you’ve experienced trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, or difficult relationships.
You might notice yourself:
• Shutting down during conflict
• Feeling overwhelmed by small triggers
• Becoming hypervigilant or on edge
• Reacting more strongly than you expected
• Struggling to calm down once you feel activated
These responses aren’t a sign that something is “wrong” with you. They can be learned protective responses shaped by your experiences.
Understanding the connection between trauma, the nervous system, emotional regulation, and mental health can be an important step toward healing.
At Green Path Psychotherapy, we offer trauma-informed therapy in Toronto and virtually across Ontario, including support for anxiety, PTSD, complex trauma, emotional regulation, and nervous system dysregulation.
You don’t have to navigate it alone🌿

Trauma isn’t always one big event. 🌿
As Rebecca explains, through an EMDR lens, trauma can be any experience that has a significant enough impact on your nervous system that it continues to affect your day-to-day life.
It can include neglect, bullying, or repeated experiences over time, NOT just what we traditionally think of as “big T” trauma.

What happens when your body continues to respond to danger, even when you’re no longer in danger?
In this episode of the Green Path Psychotherapy Podcast, Alex is joined by clinicians Gianluca, Jess, and Rebecca to explore trauma, the nervous system, safety, and the window of tolerance.
As a trauma-specialized psychotherapy clinic, trauma is an important part of the work we do at Green Path. In this conversation, our clinicians discuss what trauma can look like beyond the traditional idea of a single major event, including the effects of repeated experiences, childhood experiences, neglect, bullying, and other experiences that can continue to affect the nervous system over time.
We also explore why trauma can leave someone feeling constantly on guard, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsafe... even when there is no immediate danger. The team breaks down the window of tolerance, hypervigilance, hyperarousal, hypoarousal, and how trauma can influence the way we perceive safety and respond to triggers.
The conversation also touches on how trauma-focused therapy can support people in expanding their window of tolerance and reconnecting with their bodies, emotions, and sense of safety. The clinicians share some gentle starting points, including body awareness, grounding, mindfulness, movement, journaling, and connecting with sources of resilience.
If you've ever wondered why you feel constantly on edge, shut down, overwhelmed, or disconnected from your body, this conversation offers a compassionate starting point for understanding your responses and what healing can look like.

Do you overthink someone's tone, texts, or facial expressions?
You might find yourself rereading a message, analyzing a change in someone's tone, or wondering if you did something wrong,...even when there isn't clear evidence that anything is wrong.
Sometimes, this can be connected to anxiety, past trauma, or a nervous system that has learned to stay alert for signs of danger or rejection.
When you've experienced situations where you had to carefully read other people's moods to feel safe, being “hyper-aware” can become a way of protecting yourself.
But you don't have to stay stuck in that constant state of uncertainty. Trauma therapy and anxiety therapy can help you understand these patterns, regulate your nervous system, and build a greater sense of safety in your relationships. 🌿
If you're in Toronto or anywhere in Ontario and feel like your mind is constantly scanning for what's wrong, therapy can be a space to explore why, and learn new ways of responding.
You aren't “too sensitive.” Your nervous system may simply be trying to protect you.

In Episode 6 of the podcast, Gianluca dives into the deep-rooted societal pressure on men to "figure it out on their own."
From viewing life’s challenges as solo problem-solving puzzles to feeling a sense of shame or defeat when reaching out for help, seeking therapy is often wrongly framed as a weakness rather than a tool for growth.
It’s time to break down the stigma around men’s mental health and reframe asking for support as a act of self-reliance and strength. 💪🧠

How does becoming parents change a relationship?
Welcoming a child into your family can be one of life's most meaningful experiences, but it can also be one of the biggest adjustments for your relationship.
Many couples notice changes after becoming parents. Conversations may revolve around schedules and responsibilities, time together becomes limited, intimacy may shift, and the mental load of parenting can leave both partners feeling exhausted. These changes are common and don't necessarily mean your relationship is failing... they often reflect the reality of navigating a new season together.
The transition into parenthood can bring joy, love, and purpose, while also introducing stress, sleep deprivation, changing roles, and less time to connect as a couple. It's okay if your relationship feels different than it did before. The goal isn't to go back to how things were, it's to learn how to GROW TOGETHER in this new chapter.
Sometimes, the smallest moments can make the biggest difference. Checking in with one another, expressing appreciation, making time for honest conversations, and approaching each other with curiosity instead of criticism can help strengthen your connection over time.
🌿 At Green Path Psychotherapy, we support couples navigating the challenges that can come with parenthood, including changes in communication, intimacy, emotional connection, conflict, and life transitions. Our clinicians provide compassionate, evidence-based couples therapy in Toronto and virtual couples therapy across Ontario, helping partners reconnect and build stronger, healthier relationships.
Parenthood changes your relationship, but it doesn't have to weaken it! With understanding, communication, and support, couples can continue to grow together through every stage of family life.
