In 2017, Opera Atelier was invited to premiere the company's specially-commissioned production of Harmonia Sacra in the Royal Chapel in Versailles. Little did we know what an important role the Royal Chapel was destined to play in our lives. Our staging for Charpentier's David and Jonathan premiered in the Royal Chapel in 2022 and has already been revived in this spectacular venue.
The work of Charpentier continues to be an inspiration for all of us at Opera Atelier, and we look forward to producing the fully-staged Canadian premiere of his miniature masterpiece, The Descent of Orpheus, this Fall in a magically transformed Koerner Hall.

Marshall writes, “Roberto Ferri is often described as a surrealist artist. His remarkable paintings are deeply influenced by the Italian Baroque masters he so much admires. His painting, 'Sonno di Rugia,' seems to me to be an ideal evocation of the story of Orpheus as told in M.A. Charpentier's masterpiece, The Descent of Orpheus. Expect all of this beauty and magic in Opera Atelier's fall premiere of The Descent of Orpheus.”
Subscriptions, which include Charpentier's masterpiece, are now on sale!

Auguste Rodin's ravishing sculpture depicts Orpheus attempting to lead Eurydice back from the Underworld while obeying Pluto's command not to look at her until they reach the Earth's surface.
This marble version of Rodin's miniature masterpiece makes us think of Charpentier's miniature masterpiece, The Descent of Orpheus, which Opera Atelier will present for the first time this fall as the opening production of the company's 26/27 season.

13 years ago, Opera Atelier made its Glimmerglass Opera debut with the company’s production of Lully’s Armide, which later played in Toronto and at the Royal Opera House in Versailles. We have performed this opera more times than any other production in the company’s repertoire.
Pynkoski says: “This opera never pales. You come to understand why Lully’s Armide has long been considered the greatest piece of French lyric theatre in history.”
