Gallery Arcturus is a not-for-profit contemporary art exhibition and art education centre located in downtown Toronto. It is funded and operated by The Foundation for the Study of Objective Art, a private charity.
-
The gallery is an oasis of peace in the midst of a busy city. The space has been carefully designed to provide an opportunity for uninterrupted contemplation of visual art without the pressures of commercial galleries and without the admission charges typical of other public galleries. Light, colour and proportion have been used to create an atmosphere suitable for accessing subtle impressions and insights which are usually obscured by the impact of the urban landscape.
-
The gallery also provides an outstanding opportunity for contemporary visual artists to display their work without the pressures of commercial considerations. The gallery seeks to exhibit works which engage the viewer’s sensations and feelings in a movement toward self-transcendence. The gallery has a view about what art is for: that art is for exploring the larger context of what it means to be human.

Although we are not part of the Hop it's great to see it has returned.
Many of these galleries are not open Sundays so this is a chance to visit places normally unavailable.
🎨 From September 24–27, the Canadian Art Hop brings together arts spaces in a coast-to-coast celebration of the country’s vibrant arts community. We’re marking the occasion with special programming at The Image Centre.
This Sunday, discover Richard Avedon Immortal with Paul Roth, Director of The Image Centre and curator of the exhibition. Get a closer look at Avedon’s work and hear the stories behind the show.

A visitor to the gallery, showing family from overseas around town, just asked about lesser known landmarks in the city and so here's an updated list of Toronto Hidden [Urban] Gems:
Assuming folks can find the ROM, AGO, the Distillery District and even MOCA Toronto without too much trouble, here’s my current short-list of hidden gems I give to visitors who visit our public art museum [ #4].

A rewarding circuit around the Eaton Centre via Toronto Urban Gems including a great-looking new cafe... with a view of the corner of Victoria St and the quirky roadway known as Dundas Square.
One could sit awhile here overlooking the changes around the former Imperial Pub with a new building expected on an unusual triangle of land so well documented by Avard Woolaver Photography.
Also: So sad to recall the previous fountain and waterwindings that adjoined the Church of Holy Trinity; but many people who spend time here are at risk which may have more to do with the removal of the water than mere funding.
~ed.
The public spaces here definitely changed amid the suffering that has occurred since 2020 but are still worth the time and attention.
