Throwback Thursday 👇
Accounting used to be about shoeboxes, paper files, spreadsheets and a whole lot of manual data entry.
And for years, the accountant’s job was largely to tell you what happened last year.
Technology changed that.
Cloud accounting, bank feeds, digital documents and automation mean we can spend less time moving numbers around and more time helping business owners understand what’s happening right now — and what they should do next.
That’s the part I find exciting.
The goal isn’t technology for the sake of technology.
It’s using better tools to create better conversations.
More time for planning.
More time for advice.
More time helping clients make smarter decisions.
Because getting the numbers right should be the starting point, not the finish line.
What’s one old-school accounting habit you’d be very happy to never see again? 👇
If you stopped working for ninety days, what would still generate revenue?
For most independent consultants the answer is nothing. That’s not an effort problem — it’s a business-model problem. Job Bank puts the top of the Ontario band at $86.54/hour; a genuinely full year caps out near $156,000. Your rate isn’t your ceiling. Your calendar is.

Today is a good reminder that every business is built on people who show up, solve problems, take risks, and keep moving forward.
To our clients, our team, and every entrepreneur building something of their own — enjoy the break. You’ve earned it. 🙌
The emails will still be there tomorrow. Unfortunately, so will the spreadsheets. 😅
Happy Labour Day from all of us at CPA4IT.ca.

Throwback Thursday: remember when accounting meant shoeboxes, filing cabinets and enough manual data entry to make your Ctrl+C keys nervous? 😄
The tools have changed dramatically. Cloud accounting, bank feeds, digital documents and automated workflows can move information faster than ever.
But the biggest change should not just be how we process the numbers. It should be what we do with them.
The old model often ended with: “Here’s what happened last year.”
The modern model has the opportunity to say: “Here’s what’s happening now — and here’s what we should do next.”
Less time moving data. More time explaining, advising and helping clients make decisions.
What old-school accounting habit are you happiest to leave behind?

Canadian small business owners: a tax deduction is only useful when the claim is supportable. 🇨🇦
Five areas create confusion again and again: meals and entertainment, home-office costs, vehicle expenses, personal versus business spending, and purchases that may need to be treated as capital assets.
The common theme? Do not guess. Keep records, document the business purpose, and claim only the business-related amount you are entitled to under Canadian tax rules.
For sole proprietors and incorporated business owners, the rules are not always identical, which is why “my friend deducts it” is not much of a tax strategy. 😄
Save this carousel for the next time you are sorting receipts — and if an expense feels like a grey area, ask before filing rather than after CRA asks.
Which business expense causes you the most confusion?
Firm ownership can be lonely in a way that is hard to explain unless you have lived it.
From the outside, leadership can look busy, successful and connected. You have a team. Clients. Meetings. Messages. Decisions all day long.
But being the person everyone comes to can make it surprisingly difficult to know who you go to when the pressure lands on you.
That is one of the reasons I have come to value community so much. Not networking for the sake of collecting business cards. Real peers. People you can talk to about the messy stuff, the decisions you are second-guessing, the things that did not work, and the parts of ownership that do not make it into the victory lap.
Good leaders do not need to have all the answers. They need people around them who make it safe to ask better questions.
Firm owners and business leaders: what has helped you feel less alone in the journey?
