Thrifty Treasures in downtown Trail seeks volunteers to help community thrive!

For over 20 years, the Thrifty Treasure Thrift Store has been a cornerstone of support for the Trail community, offering gently used furniture, household items, and clothing to individuals and families in need.

Whether helping locals rebuild after a fire, providing essential clothing for growing children, or assisting those facing financial hardship, the store has been a reliable resource for many.

Now, Career Development Services (CDS), which has operated the store for two decades, is transitioning it into a fully volunteer-run initiative.

To make this shift successful, CDS is calling on community members to step forward and help keep this vital service running.

“We’re looking for volunteers who can dedicate a few hours each week to support this important cause,” said Sheila Adcock, CDS contract manager.

“The thrift store isn’t just about selling secondhand items — it’s about helping people get back on their feet, no matter their circumstances.”

The model will follow the example of hospital auxiliary thrift stores in Rossland and Castlegar, ensuring that all proceeds go back into local community programs.

With the transition underway, the store is currently closed for a refresh, allowing time to reorganize and recruit volunteers before reopening by the end of the month.

“We’re sorting through stock, clearing out older items, and preparing for a fresh start with an entirely new volunteer team,” Adcock explained. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to give back and make a real difference in the lives of those in need.”

All funds raised through the thrift store directly support vulnerable individuals in the community through various CDS programs.

Governed by the Trail Association for Community Living, CDS has been offering employment support since 1989, focusing on helping individuals with significant barriers find meaningful work.

“We’ve had to redirect some of our funding towards employment-focused programs, ensuring that individuals who rely on our services can continue to move toward inclusive, paid employment opportunities,” Adcock noted.

Community members interested in volunteering can obtain a volunteer package by calling CDS at 250-364-1104 or emailing Erin Thoma at [email protected].

Thoma is also the point of contact for arranging donation drop-offs while the store remains temporarily closed.

For over three decades, CDS has been committed to empowering individuals through employment support, and the Thrifty Treasure Thrift Store remains a key part of that mission.

With the help of dedicated volunteers, this beloved store will continue serving those in need, ensuring that no one in the community is left behind.
