where there is a human
there is a mess.

Most people think curiosity is a choice.
I don’t.
I think curiosity is a luxury of safety.
When we feel overwhelmed, frustrated, pressured, embarrassed, rejected, or out of control, our brain isn’t focused on understanding.
It’s focused on one thing:
“How do I get out of this?”
That’s why we yell.
That’s why we shut down.
That’s why we avoid.
That’s why we try to control.
Not because we’re bad people.
Because we’re looking for relief.
The problem is that relief and understanding aren’t the same thing.
The missing step is the pause.
The pause is the doorway.
It creates enough safety for our view to widen.
And when our view widens, curiosity becomes possible.
Instead of:
“How do I make this stop?”
We begin to ask:
“What is really going on here?”
And that’s where understanding begins.

The Doorway
I had an unexpected realization recently.
I didn’t realize how often I was checking.
Checking if people cared.
Checking if they were interested.
Checking if they were choosing me.
Checking if something had changed.
Not always consciously.
Just little moments of uncertainty that my mind would immediately try to solve.
A slower reply.
A change in tone.
Less initiation.
More space.
And before I knew it, I was attaching meaning to things that might not have meant anything at all.
Then I wondered:
What would happen if I started from a different assumption?
What if people cared?
What if they were showing up in the ways they could?
What if a moment of uncertainty didn’t automatically mean something was wrong?
What if I trusted that if something truly changed, I would notice?
The shift was surprisingly freeing.
Because I realized I wasn’t just looking for proof that other people cared.
I was looking for certainty.
And certainty is impossible.
There will always be gaps.
There will always be unknowns.
There will always be moments where I don’t know exactly what someone is thinking or feeling.
Maybe trust isn’t learning how to eliminate uncertainty.
Maybe trust is learning how to remain open in its presence.
For me, that has become a doorway.
A doorway out of constant checking.
And back into living.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ASKED YOURSELF WHAT YOU NEEDED?
Not what your children need.
Not what your partner needs.
Not what your family needs.
You.
If that question feels uncomfortable, impossible, selfish, or brings tears to your eyes…
That might be worth paying attention to.
Sometimes burnout isn’t the result of caring too much.
It’s the result of caring for everyone except yourself for too long.

Sometimes the people we meet awaken something we didn’t know was missing.
This story is a gentle reminder that while we often search for connection in others, some of the most important discoveries happen within ourselves.
Keep living. Keep wondering. Keep becoming.
Sometimes the very thing we long for most—connection, understanding, belonging—is the thing we pull away from when we need it most. Withdrawal can feel safer than being seen because distance protects us from disappointment, rejection, vulnerability, and hurt. Yet the protection often comes at a cost: the loneliness of standing outside the very connection our hearts are quietly hoping to find.
