“What would change if the Yukon River was understood not as a resource, but as a living being with its own rights, interests, and responsibilities”
In "What the River Asks of Us," Emily Ross — a Young Leader with To Swim and Speak with Salmon - Youth Advocacy Training Program, a project on the shared platform — describes the power of environmental personhood. The concept invites us to view rivers and other natural landforms as living beings that hold rights to be stewarded, cared for and governed as legal subjects with their own interests.

That's where community-based data systems come in.
Researchers at Carleton University and the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA) have created a practical guide to help Indigenous Guardians and other land-based programs work through the process of setting up their own community-based data systems.
Check it out:
Community-based Data Management for Northern Indigenous Land-Based Programs - MakeWay The project brought Guardians together to discuss the data they collect, how they use data, and their data needs. It also involved creation of a new guide
