The competition concept is that a fictitious company has hired a team to design and build a prototype vehicle to be evaluated for production.

Formula UBC Racing is an engineering student team that designs, builds, and races an open-wheeled, formula-style race car for competition each year at Formula SAE Michigan. Formula UBC is an engineering student team that competes in the international Formula SAE (FSAE) Collegiate design series and has been active for the past 25 years. The car is judged on: a business plan, overall engineering design, production cost, and finally is raced to evaluate performance. The competition puts students in a real world situation where research, design, manufacturing, testing, developing, marketing, managing and fund raising are all major considerations. A volunteer run team of 30-40 students from various undergraduate and graduate engineering disciplines as well as select other faculties make this project a reality. Each year, a new chassis must be fabricated. This leads to most components being redesigned and improved upon each year.

A tire surface envelope is a packaging constraint that defines the space available for the car relative to the tires. It is established using the tire positions and rule-defined boundaries, creating an outer limit that the vehicle must fit within when viewed from the rear and side.

For FSAE design, this envelope helps guide the packaging of the chassis, bodywork, sidepods, cooling system, and other components. It ensures that these parts stay within the permitted vehicle volume while maintaining the required relationship to the tires. In simple terms, it acts as a geometric boundary that helps determine how large the car can be and where components can be placed.
