I painted this picture during my first week in Canada.

I left Kyiv on the first day of the war, and five weeks later, I arrived here. One of the first things I did was buy a canvas and some paints.

I painted this in about thirty minutes. No sketch, no plan. I simply put what I was feeling onto the canvas.

The dark colours around the edges were where I was at that time.
The white centre was where I wanted to go.

Back to the light. Back to myself. Back to the inner place I was used to living from.

I didn’t know how long it would take or what the journey would look like. But I knew I would get there.

Years later, when I finally had a space for my own studio, this painting was the very first thing I brought in.

There was nothing here yet.
Just empty walls - and this painting hanging on a single nail.

Today, I look at it from a completely different place.

I’ve been living in that white centre for a long time now.

And this painting is no longer about darkness for me.
It’s about the journey toward the light. 🤍

Я намалювала цю картину в перший тиждень після приїзду до Канади.

Я виїхала з Києва в перший день війни, а через п’ять тижнів опинилася в Канаді. Одне з перших, що я зробила, - купила полотно і фарби.

Цю картину я намалювала хвилин за тридцять. Без ескізу, без плану. Просто перенесла на полотно свій стан.

Темні кольори по краях - це те, де я була тоді.
А білий центр - те, куди я хотіла прийти.

До світла. До себе. До того внутрішнього стану, в якому я звикла жити.

Я не знала, скільки часу це займе і яким буде шлях. Але я знала, що туди дійду.

Через кілька років, коли у мене з’явилося приміщення моєї власної студії, ця картина була першою річчю, яку я сюди привезла.

Тут ще не було нічого.
Тільки порожні стіни - і ця картина на одному цвяху.

Сьогодні я дивлюся на неї зовсім з іншого місця.

Я вже давно там, у тому білому центрі.

І тепер ця картина для мене не про темряву.
Вона про шлях до світла. 🤍
