How do you recreate a piece of baseball history when almost no reference material exists?

For Buck Martinez’s catcher’s mask, our starting point was incredibly limited: one archival photograph and a short piece of video footage.
No drawings.
No dimensions.
No CAD files.
No additional views of the original mask.
The exact model was nowhere to be found, so our team had to reverse-engineer it from what little visual information existed - studying proportions, geometry, connections and every visible detail to reconstruct the mask as faithfully as possible.

A significant part of the project happened before fabrication even began. Countless hours went into 3D modelling and interpreting details that were only partially visible in the reference material.

From there, the mask brought together several fabrication technologies under one build: 3D printing, robotic CNC machining, custom metal fabrication, hard coating, finishing and painting.
The final challenge was assembly. Components produced through completely different processes had to come together precisely as one object - at an entirely different scale.

From one photograph and a few seconds of archival footage to a fully realized oversized recreation of Buck Martinez’s catcher’s mask.

A special moment at Rogers Centre this Saturday 💙⚾️ Toronto Blue Jays

Buck Martinez was inducted into the new Toronto Blue Jays Hall of Excellence, celebrating more than four decades with the organization as a player, manager and broadcaster.

For this special ceremony, Custom Engineered Arts created three oversized props, each inspired by a different chapter of Buck’s incredible journey with the Blue Jays.

From behind the plate, to managing the team, to becoming one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian baseball.
