Movement is Medicine: treating osteoarthritis with exercise 09/16/2026

Think a diagnosis of knee or hip osteoarthritis means a life sentence of sitting on the sidelines? Breakthrough research shows that targeted movement—not rest—is actually the ultimate key to protecting your joints and slashing pain. Discover how a tailored exercise program can help reclaim your strength, avoid premature surgery, and get back to the activities you love.

Movement is Medicine: treating osteoarthritis with exercise Osteoarthritis (OA) is most common in the knees and hips, followed by other joints like ankles and hands. For many people, the diagnosis of osteoarthritis in one of their joints feels like a life sentence of inactivity and inevitable slow descent into frailty. Often, the diagnosis comes after severa...

September is Arthritis Awareness Month in Canada! 🍁 To mark the occasion, we’re busting the top 5 myths about Osteoarthritis (OA)!

If you’ve been told OA means slowing down or "saving" your joints, it’s time to rethink what’s possible. Your joints are living tissue—they adapt, rebuild, and crave movement! 💪

🛠️ MYTH 1: Osteoarthritis is just "wear and tear"
The Reality: OA isn’t like the tread wearing off a tire. Canadian arthritis research confirms joint cartilage is dynamic and responsive! Appropriate load and movement actually feed your cartilage, stimulating it to stay healthy and resilient.

👵 MYTH 2: It’s an "old person’s disease" that’s completely inevitable
The Reality: Over half of Canadians living with arthritis are under age 65! While aging is a factor, joint injury, muscle weakness, and genetics play huge roles. Early intervention, rehab, and staying active can rewrite your joint health story at any age.

🏋️‍♀️ MYTH 3: You should rest painful, arthritic joints
The Reality: "Motion is lotion!" Rest leads to muscle weakness and stiffer joints. Supervised strength training—like progressive load exercises—builds the supportive muscle shield your joints need to feel stable and move with less pain.

🛑 MYTH 4: Exercise will damage your joint cartilage further
The Reality: Targeted exercise is actually one of the primary recommended treatments for OA! Focused treatment plans show that strength training reduces pain, improves mobility, and lowers the need for joint replacement.

🔪 MYTH 5: Surgery or injections are the only real solutions
The Reality: Non-surgical, active conservative care is powerful! Exercise therapy, lifestyle modifications, weight management, and targeted physiotherapy are first-line treatments proven to dramatically improve quality of life.

Ready to take control of your joint health this September? Our team at Lab Health Physio is here to guide you through supervised, evidence-based movement programs tailored to your goals.
