After a successful voyage, they return to harbor, only to find that nothing is as they remember it. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera and constructing all the sound in post, Mark Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Director Kyle Balda finds a level of charm and wit that eluded him helming three movies in the “Despicable Me”/“Minions” franchise, striking a tone that’s similar to “Babe” or the “Paddington” films. Also give credit to screenwriter Craig Mazin — who co-created “The Last of Us” for HBO, as radically different a project from this as you could imagine — for adapting German crime writer Leonie Swann’s novel, “Three Bags Full.” “The Sheep Detectives” is the kind of movie that sneaks up on you as you watch. You think you’re settling in to watch a sweet, slightly odd little comedy about farm animals and murder, and things unfold that deliver a surprising gentleness and emotional heft. Smack in the middle of sensation and observation is Mary Harron’s trailblazing debut film, “I Shot Andy Warhol,” released 30 years ago this month, with a timely restoration from Janus Films rolling out theatrically this summer. Unlike so many retellings of famous assassinations, attempted or otherwise, Harron’s movie gets to the heart of its subject’s discontent without dwelling on dramatizations of Valerie Solanas’ fragile psyche. It’s compelling, but not overblown, unconcerned with convincing the viewer that the film knows anything more intimate about Solanas than is readily available through a bit of old-fashioned research. Instead, Harron engages with Solanas’ work inside the context of the world in which Solanas created it, depicting her with far more empathy than the tabloids ever afforded.-Salon
