James Bay Community Project (JBCP) is a community organization with a long history of actively serving James Bay and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

James Bay Community Project is a non-profit community organization helping seniors, youth and families by providing a variety of programs, community support and volunteer services. We operate as a non-profit, charitable society, with a volunteer board of directors. We offer community and volunteer services for families, youth and seniors. We live and work on the traditional lands of the L'kwungen speaking peoples of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

Calling all little firefighters and other afternoon adventurers!

Did you know we also have a free afternoon playgroup at our Family Resource Centre?

As many of our older children move on to preschool or daycare, we’d love to welcome some new faces. Whether your child is ready for an imaginary rescue mission or prefers playdough, painting, puzzles, toys, books or outdoor play, there’s plenty to explore and enjoy together.

Tuesdays, 2:30–4:30 pm, unless otherwise noted. For families with children up to 5 years.

Please register in advance at (250) 388-7844 ext. 312 or [email protected]; no drop-ins are available. You can book your visit up to 14 days ahead.

This week, we kicked off a new season of our Bridging the Digital Divide workshops for seniors aged 65+. Together with Jim, our program lead, we love seeing participants discover tools that help them build belonging, reduce isolation, and make everyday tasks easier.

One participant found texting and emailing difficult because of dyslexia. Over a few classes, they learned to use voice-to-text and text-to-voice tools to exchange messages. Their sister, who lives across the country, sent us a thank-you letter sharing how much this had changed their ability to stay in touch. That’s what this program is all about.

Sessions run on Mondays through the end of March, with individual 45-minute appointments and a 75-minute small-group session available. Each person can attend up to three sessions.

Spaces are filling quickly, especially for one-on-one appointments, so register soon!

Who could resist a cup of delicious coffee?

For years, our good friends at Level Ground have generously donated high-quality coffee for seniors at our Connections Luncheon and participants in our community programs. Every batch brings warmth and a little extra joy to our gatherings, and we’re so grateful!

And yes, what you see in the photo is just a small part of their generous donations ☕

At our Family Resource Centre, we love watching your little ones grow and learn, and feel honoured when our playgroups can be part of that journey. Sometimes, we even get to share a milestone. This lovely message from a parent warmed our hearts (and yes, we remember that moment too!):

“My kid took her first step at JBCP and everybody applauded. I could never forget that lovely moment.”

Our playgroups are back for the fall, and we’re excited to welcome you and your kiddos for more play, connection, and discovery.

Our very first Tea & Mortality gathering takes place tomorrow, and we couldn’t be more excited.

The group is already full — a powerful reminder of how important it is to create welcoming spaces where people can talk openly about death, dying, grief, and end-of-life planning.

In the meantime, meet Karla Kerr, the wonderful facilitator who will be leading our conversations.

Karla is a funeral director, death doula, and founder of Karla Kerr - Empowered End of Life. After 18 years working with death and the people navigating it, she’s learned that avoiding death doesn’t make it go away, it just leaves us unprepared when it shows up.

Karla brings humour, curiosity, honesty, and a healthy disregard for taboo to conversations about dying, grief, mortality, and what actually matters while we’re still here. She believes we can talk about death without it being morbid, and that discussing hard things together fosters a tighter community.

We’re so grateful to Karla for bringing her knowledge, warmth, and compassion to the group. We hope this will be just the beginning of many meaningful conversations in our community.
