The autumn equinox is upon us once again! Earth has reached the point in its orbit where the Sun is directly above the Equator. Consequently, the amounts of daylight and darkness are nearly equal across the globe for the day, in turn, marking the official start of Fall in the Northern Hemisphere while Spring begins in the Southern Hemisphere. Our magnifiers are efficient tools for students and professionals alike, to help track and observe nature as the seasons change.

Mendeleev Monday - Atomic Number 23 - Vanadium (V). Vanadium was discovered twice, first in 1801 by Spanish mineralogist Andrés Manuel del Río, however a shipwreck led to his discovery ultimately not being proven nor credited. Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström later rediscovered it in 1830 and named it after Vanadis (Freya), the Old Norse goddess of beauty and fertility. Vanadium is used to make shock resistant steel alloys, industrial tools, and found in large-scale batteries that store renewable energy for electrical grids.

It's Cheeseburger Day! While today is a day worth enjoying a cheeseburger and taking a moment to appreciate the art of culinary creativity, food safety should never be neglected. Cleaning and sanitizing with Chlorine or QUAT solutions are inexpensive methods that are quick to verify dilutions and help to pass inspections by Health Departments.

Mendeleev Monday -Atomic Number 22 - Titanium (Ti). Titanium is named after the Titans of Greek mythology because of its strength. It is the 9th most abundant element in the Earth's crust, but because it reacts instantly with oxygen to create a highly corrosion resistant protective film, it is expensive and difficult to isolate. Titanium does not cause toxic reactions to the human body, so it is commonly bonded directly with bone for medical and dental implants, and used in sporting gear, sunscreens, paints, pipes, toothpaste and vehicles.
Mendeleev (Holiday) Monday - Atomic Number 21 - Scandium (Sc). Similar to how you discovered this Monday post on Sunday! Scandium was actually predicted by Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 using his periodic table before it was discovered ten years later by Swedish chemist Lars Fedrik Nilson. It rarely forms concentrated mineable deposits, instead it is found across more than 800 minerals and is mainly extracted as a byproduct of processing other elements. Scandium plays a role in producing light that stadiums and film sets use, and is used to detect leaks and trace fluid movement in pipes and oil refineries.

It's World Beard Day! Today celebrates beards, as well as the culture and symbolism often attributed with them. Scissors play a large role in beard culture - fine details can be better achieved with them than when using an electric trimmer.
We sell quality stainless dissection scissors that can also be used for some fine hair trimming.

Mendeleev Monday - Atomic Number 20 - Calcium (Ca). Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in Earth's crust and the most abundant metal in the human body. To keep blood levels stable for your heart and nerves, your body constantly withdraws or deposits calcium, consequently your entire skeleton is completely remodeled about every 10 years. Calcium is also used to clean drinking water, fertilizers, antacids, construction (limestone), and toothpaste.
Mendeleev Monday -Atomic Number 19 - Potassium (K).
Potassium is essential for human nutrition and all living cells. It is the seventh most abundant element in the Earth's crust and the eighth most abundant element in the human body. Potassium is found in many different foods and helps maintain your nerves, muscles (heart rhythm), fluid balance, and blood pressure. It is also used in soaps, detergents, glass, cleaning products, and batteries.
