The Optical Group, in partnership with the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC) and NAIT, is thrilled to announce the recipients of our 2026 scholarships, investing in the future of independent eyecare across Canada.

After reviewing applications from talented students nationwide, our panel has selected two outstanding individuals:

Full Scholarship Winner: Darby McKie
Darby McKie of Thompson Eye Care Centre has been awarded the full Optical Sciences, Eyeglasses Program scholarship, covering tuition, textbooks, and fees for all three years of the program. Darby’s dedication to independent eyecare and commitment to growing in the profession made her a standout candidate.

Contact Lens Scholarship Winner: Eric Haggerty
Eric Haggerty of Urban Eyewear Inc. has been awarded the Contact Lens Program scholarship, covering tuition, textbooks, and fees for the one-year program. Eric’s passion for advancing his skills in contact lens fitting and patient care set him apart.

Both recipients work in independent optical stores and were selected for their dedication to the eyecare profession and their commitment to serving their communities. These scholarships reflect The Optical Group’s ongoing mission to strengthen independent eyecare by supporting the next generation of optical professionals.

We’d like to thank the OAC and NAIT for their continued partnership and every applicant who took the time to apply. The caliber of this year’s candidates made the decision incredibly difficult, and we’re inspired by the future of our industry.
