SMS Engineering

This week, our team took time to listen, learn and reflect ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We welcomed Glenda Gartner from True North Real Estate Development and Carly Sinclair from the Southern Chiefs’ Organization to share their perspectives on partnership, Indigenous participation and collaboration through the Portage Place redevelopment, a project SMS has been involved in throughout.

We also enjoyed bannock, jam and cinnamon buns from local Indigenous business KookumsPantry with our team.

It was an opportunity to reflect on how the work we do and the relationships we build can contribute to economic reconciliation and have an impact beyond the project itself.

Thank you, Glenda and Carly, for joining us and giving our team an opportunity to listen and learn.

A grande thank you to Knapsack Coffee - mobile coffee camper + events + cafe ☻ for stopping by the SMS office with some delicious fall flavours and keeping our team fuelled up for the season ahead. 🍂☕️

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝟭𝟱-𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆, 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱! 🎉

Richard Honey joined SMS back in 2011, when we were about 60 people. Today, we’re more than 110 strong, and Richard has been an important part of the team along the way.

Over the years, he’s helped strengthen our financial operations, improve reporting and forecasting, support better project tracking and manage the financial side of a growing organization.

Now our CFO, Richard continues to bring his experience and practical perspective to the people, projects and business behind SMS.

Thank you, Richard, for 15 years of hard work and everything you’ve contributed to the SMS team. 👏

When severe flooding left the 𝗗𝗮𝘂𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲's basement underwater, critical hospital systems were compromised, and emergency services were disrupted.

With an ambitious deadline, set by the Premier of Manitoba, to restore services for the community, SMS Engineering worked alongside Nortec Electric, Duncalfe Mechanical, PCL Construction, Manitoba Hydro, IBEW 2085, Sharedhealthmb, other healthcare stakeholders, and many other partners to devise a plan and bring it to life.

Together, the team developed innovative solutions for power, communications, data connectivity, and HVAC systems, supporting a temporary facility that was designed and built in just 10 days.

The facility opened over the September long weekend, and core emergency services are once again supporting the Dauphin community.

We're proud to have helped restore these critical services and grateful to all of the partners who made it possible.👏

Our SMS team was out for the Manitoba Women in Construction Tailgate Party! 🏈

As a proud Platinum Sponsor of MB Women in Construction, it was great to see so many people from across the industry come out for the event.

We had a fun evening catching up with familiar faces, enjoying some delicious food and showing up in style in our branded PPE!

Thanks to the MWC team for putting together another great event! 👏
