I love using scraps (fabric, yarn, paper) and making “something from nothing.” This summer I sorted my bin of fabric scraps into colourways, and started making what are called crumb blocks from them. A little goes a long way! I’ve already made 40 blocks, and I have lots left. This is a great way to just play, with no plan in mind! I don’t know what I’m going to do with them when they’re done. I’ve considered placemats or a quilt top to donate, but I’m not sure. What would you do with them?

To help motivate me to finish some projects from in-person classes, including mounting/framing, I decided to make a little textile art wall with class samples, some old, some new. It’s sort of an inspiration wall as I hope to use all of these techniques again! And there’s room to add more….

This is my finished piece for ‘Dry Media VIII: Plant Fibres,’ an exhibition with TFAM members TFAM inspired by a workshop at the WIN Herbarium U of Manitoba Herbarium.
This is an artist book exploring various ways of surviving the noxious Creeping Bellflower. The silk fabric has been sunprinted using cut bellflower stems, and then stitched with cotton and silk threads. How do you cope with this plant?

Had a fun day playing with indigo last week with a friend! We did some advance prep to do some stitched shibori patterns, and used different tools for resist patterns. At the end, we did some soy wax resist which was pretty cool! I also had a bottle of Tulip resist, which I tried for one piece. It came out like a clear gel and needed several hours to dry, then was washed out after dyeing. The fabric I used was from a thrifted bamboo cotton sheet.

It’s really not the right weather for this, but I can say I’m ready ahead of the next season! I finished my quilt coat and here are a few pics. I used the pattern from Patchwork & Poodles with a zipper closure and welt pockets instead of the patch pockets.
The design is improv log cabin tunnel blocks and the fabrics are mostly from my stash, including some hand dyed by me, some by others, some thrifted cotton clothing, and some vintage linens. I used a bamboo blend batting and a thrifted Ikea duvet cover for the backing/lining. I made panels for each of the pattern pieces and quilted and washed them before cutting out the pattern. For quilting, I used Wonderfil Decobob 80wt thread on top, and a regular Guterman thread in the bobbin.
Even in an air conditioned house, this jacket is very warm! So now it’s ready for fall, which will be a relief from this heat!
