What better way to celebrate National Pet Bird Day than with a Pretty Bird??

Tiki the macaw couldn't resist showing off her feathers at her most recent check up with us - and we can't help but agree. She's a VERY Pretty Bird😍

❗❗CAUTION - VERY GROSS VIDEO AHEAD❗❗

THIS gross parasite is called a Cuterebra - more commonly known as Botfly Larvae. We don't get to see these guys often (and very rarely in non-wildlife patients), so it was a big surprise when Pumpkin the rabbit came in with this not-so-little passenger!

Cuterebra start their lives as eggs in soil. As they develop into larvae they sense carbon dioxide, hatch, and leave the soil. They then bury themselves into the skin of the nearest host they can find, and grow into THIS monstrosity.

The biggest risk factor for Cuterebra is allowing your pet to sleep outside overnight - this is when the larvae are most active, and sleeping pets may not wake up and realize something is making a home inside of them.

Proper removal is a tricky, delicate, and absolutely disgusting (or captivating, if you're the techs that work here) process; but without it the larvae continue living IN the skin before reaching maturity and bursting back out, leaving the host at risk for major infection.

The good news is that Pumpkin is recovering well from the extraction and her humans are making some changes their outdoor enclosure to ensure this doesn't happen again!

ADOPTABLE AMPHIBIANS!

🐸 Meet Cheeseburger & Lemon Loaf! 🐸

Vet Tech Sam has been fostering these two frogs since they came to us as eeny weeny babies who were underweight and not eating on their own. After a few months of care, they are now eating on their own and are ready for their new forever homes!

🍔CHEESEBURGER (Female | Green)An absolute unit. Cheeseburger has an enthusiastic—maybe too enthusiastic—feeding response. She will happily demolish any nightcrawler or discoid roach offered to her. She's a spicy lady with a lot of opinions and a BIG personality.

🍞 LEMON LOAF (Male | Yellow)A polite little guy. Lemon Loaf prefers roaches over nightcrawlers but will accept either. He has made it his life mission to ensure there is dirt in his water bowl at all times, and he may quietly sing to you at night.

If you are interested in adopting Cheeseburger or Lemon Loaf, please contact Boberta's Dragons Reptile Rescue for more information!

LARS IS STILL LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO CALL HIS OWN!

Say "Hej" to Lars!

Lars came to us after being found on the side of the highway with some pretty rough looking wounds. Thankfully this gigantic boy (Just over 5kg... which is just over 11 lbs. if you were wondering) has recovered very well from his injuries, and is now looking for a permanent home!

Because we have no history on Lars, we have no idea what his life looked like before he was picked up. We suspect he may have been abandoned, and that his injuries may have been from another rabbit.

Despite his mystery history, any scary things Lars may have experienced certainly haven't stuck with him. He has been a confident, curious (aka mischievous) and very affectionate bun. He is a voracious eater (though he can be picky about his hay), and is communicative physically and verbally about how he's feeling! He has not met any rabbits during his time with us so we aren't sure how he would do with another one, but he has met a calm senior dog and cat and wasn't bothered by them at all.

Lars is an easy to please rabbit which we think is an excellent trade off for the amount of space and food he will need in order to have his needs met.

If you've always wanted a giant rabbit (or a small rabbit shaped dog...), Lars may just be the perfect one for you! Drop us a line at [email protected] if you're interested in learning more about Lars!
