Sphere is a global community that sets standards for humanitarian action and promotes quality and accountability.
The Sphere movement was started in 1997 by a group of humanitarian professionals aiming to improve the quality of humanitarian work during disaster response. With this goal in mind, they framed a Humanitarian Charter and identified a set of humanitarian standards to be applied in humanitarian response. Initially developed by non-governmental organisations, along with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Sphere standards have become a primary reference tool for national and international NGOs, volunteers, UN agencies, governments, donors, the private sector, and many others. Today, Sphere is a worldwide community which brings together and empowers practitioners to improve the quality and accountability of humanitarian assistance. Sphere’s flagship publication, the Sphere Handbook, is one of the most widely known and internationally recognized sets of common principles and universal minimum standards in humanitarian response.

How are organisations adapting to funding cuts and what are the implications?
One year on from the funding cuts of 2025, organisations across the humanitarian, development and civil society sectors have made significant changes to how they work from restructuring and reducing costs to changing staffing and delivery models, increasing collaboration and adopting new technologies.
Community World Service Asia (CWSA), in collaboration with ACT Church of Sweden, is developing a practice paper to capture what these adaptations look like in practice.
The survey explores:
• What efficiencies have been created
• Where additional costs, workload or risks have emerged
• How adaptations are affecting quality and accountability
• What they mean for partnerships and engagement with communities

Do you work directly in sanitation?
Humanitarian sanitation is about more than engineering. We want to hear from the full range of involved from hygiene and public health promotion to community engagement, programming, sanitation engineering and other operational roles.
This survey is being conducted to gather your opinions about the Excreta Management sub-chapter in the current Sphere Standards and the Quality Standards in Emergencies.

That message came through clearly when we asked the Sphere network what they want to see in the next Handbook. The call was not simply for an updated set of standards.
It was for a Handbook that is: practical guidance for real contexts, stronger representation of local actors and communities, space for emerging realities from climate change to AI and language that makes the standards easier to understand and use.
These voices are helping shape the direction of the Sphere Handbook Revision — because standards are stronger when they reflect the realities of the people who use them.

Humanitarian action depends on good information but how often do we actually measure whether the information ecosystem is working?
The Humanitarian Information Landscape Assessment (HILA) is changing that.
Developed by iMMAP Inc.AP, CartONG, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) and KoboToolbox, with the support and endorsement of ICVA, InterAction, H2H Networketwork and Sphere, HILA provides the first global, standardised and continuously updated assessment of humanitarian information ecosystems.
The survey takes less than 20 minutes and is open to anyone working in or supporting a humanitarian response.

Last year, we asked our network what it means to help and protect one another. Their answers still resonate today – reminding us that humanitarian action is rooted in care, solidarity and above all, .
This , we once again reflect on what it means to stand with people in times of crisis: providing safe shelter, delivering dignified aid, respecting international humanitarian law, listening to communities and building resilience.
Because if we cannot safeguard those who save lives, we risk losing our own humanity.
Let’s keep choosing care, solidarity and action and keep putting humanity at the heart of humanitarian response.

A warm welcome to Maryck, Mahmoud and Anahí, our new translators!
We’re happy to have three experienced translators joining the Sphere team.
Together, they bring decades of experience in humanitarian action, international development, advocacy, technical translation and plain-language communication.
Their work will support Sphere’s content in French, Arabic and Spanish, making the standards and resources accessible to more people, in more languages and across more contexts.
