SACRED LANGUAGES: THE METAMORPHOSES by MARTIN ABEGA [15 September - 31 October 2026]

MAYI ARTS × FILAFRIQUES are pleased to present Sacred Languages: The Metamorphoses, a solo exhibition by Cameroonian photographer and visual artist Martin ABEGA, curated by Ngalula Mafwata, in collaboration with Carine Biley / Filafriques in Geneva.

From photography to textile, embroidery, cowrie shells and charcoal, the exhibition explores processes of transformation unfolding through both body and mind - fragility, trace, transmission and regeneration. For the first time, ABEGA unveils a new development in his practice around charcoal. For ABEGA, photography is never an end in itself. It is a doorway into other interconnected realms of thought. As the image moves beyond its original frame and encounters matter, it extends, fragments, absorbs and takes form anew. Inner metamorphoses become visual metamorphoses.
Through the recurring languages of the headdress, the mask and charcoal, and the presence of the female figure as a body of memory and transmission, the exhibition opens a space for contemplation around one central question: What remains of us after transformation?

LAST DAYS to (re)discover our summer black & white duo show unveiling « Rhizomes », latest works by congolese romanian artist Maliza Kiasuwa and last available editions of « Vela », by South African photographer Gavin Goodman in the gallery in Geneva.

“Rhizomes” is a series of sculptures inspired by organic forms and the networks of living things. The ropes evoke roots—invisible bonds that connect beings. Drawing on the concept of the rhizome developed by Gilles Deleuze, these works explore multiplicity, connection, and transformation. Here, nature becomes a metaphor for human complexity. The weaving here is not a collection of threads but a network of relationships between the threads. Everything holds together with a certain fragility.

“Vela, meaning “to appear” or “to emerge” in Xhosa and Zulu, speaks to the heart of this series. These works reflect the surfacing of beauty from tradition and the unfolding of form into a contemporary space. They don’t replicate African heritage, but rather appear as something new — interpreted through minimalist restraint and personal vision. Each hand-painted piece is a quiet unveiling, drawn from traditional garments and reimagined through a modern lens.” Gavin Goodman
