📢 SAVE THE DATE: 19th September, Human Rights Council 57th Session Side Event: Supporting Children’s Right to Participate in Public Affairs

We are excited to share with you the side event we have been organizing with the support of Save the Children International, Terre des Hommes International Federation, World Vision International and the Permanent Missions of Canada, Czechia, Peru, Uruguay and the EU to the United Nations Office in Geneva, for the Human Rights Council 57th Session.

The side event titled: Supporting Children’s Right to Participate in Public Affairs will take place at Palais des Nations on the 19th of September from 13h to 14h in room XXV and aims at showcasing the importance of ensuring children’s right to participate in Public Affairs.

Despite these clear international legal frameworks highlighting the importance to respect children civil and political rights, children worldwide continue to encounter significant barriers to exercise them.

In that sense, this side event aims at providing a platform to in particular:

💡 Explain what is meant by children’s civil and political rights, in particular their right to participate in public affairs.

💡 Shed light on the exercise by children of their civil and political rights and highlight the importance of children’s participation in public affairs as a fundamental human right.

💡 Identify effective strategies and good practices in the development and implementation of law and policy that States can adopt to support and enhance children's participation.

💡 Share experiences and lessons learned from various regions and contexts.

💡 Foster collaboration and partnerships among States, NGOs, international organizations, children and other stakeholders.

The event will count the participation of Joan, Andrea and Cristina, Representatives of the National Council of Children and Adolescents of Catalonia, Mikiko Otani, Member of the Committee on the Rights of the Child and President of Child Rights Connect and Layla Amira Abi-falah, Human Rights and Democracy Adviser - Rule of Law and Democracy Section, OHCHR.

📢This past Monday, two members of our Children's Advisory Team participated in a side event to the Human Rights Council to provide their perspectives on access to education.

Along with Philip Jaffé member of the CRC and the Ambassadors of Sierra Leone, the Dominican Republic, and Luxembourg, Freja and Catarina discussed the importance of an international treaty to make public education free from pre-primary through secondary school. 🖋📚💻

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the inclusion of our child advisors at this event as it is important for children to have access to influencing spaces for their advocacy work!

has come to an end! It's been 2 very productive days where we approved documents required by the Statutes and reached the mark of 119 members & observers: 14 new members, 1 new observer. 2 new ExCo members were elected & 2 re-elected.
