North West-born Prof. Paul Nkwi, 85, takes over as interim head of the Constitutional Council following the death of its President in Paris, France.
With municipal and legislative elections expected to take place in a few months, and going by the trend of previous officeholders who have died without their positions being immediately filled, Prof. Nkwi could remain in the position for quite some time.

Atanga Nji solves decades long Ashong Chieftancy dispute with a single signature.
After generations of arguments, petitions, administrative interventions and court battles over who should occupy the Ashong throne, the Ministry of Territorial Administration (MINAT) has taken what could be the most significant step yet towards bringing the protracted dispute to a definite end.
In a ministerial letter dated June 19, 2026, MINAT called on the SDO of Momo to cancel two prefectural orders: the 1994 order creating Ashong Central and the 2021 order homologating Enongang Reuben Tekwe as its third-class chief.
For many sons and daughters of Ashong, the development has brought relief—and perhaps, finally, the possibility of closure especially as the dispute has not been an ordinary palace quarrel.
Historical research traces the competing claims to the colonial period, when British administrative interventions altered the traditional succession and created competing understandings of who legitimately occupied the throne.
The controversy intensified after independence as following the death of Enogang in 1968, Ashong kingmakers enthroned David Ajeck Mbafor as Mbafor II. Yet the competing claims subsequently triggered a dispute that survived successive administrations.
In 1971, the West Cameroon government constituted the Lainjo Commission of Enquiry to investigate the matter. According to the records presented by the Mbafor side, the commission identified the legitimate Ashong kingmakers and found Mbafor II to be the rightful chief.
His recognition subsequently appeared in the West Cameroon Gazette of July 29, 1972. Despite this the dispute refused to disappear. It travelled from the palace to administrative offices and eventually into the courts. A challenge to the state's recognition of Mbafor II reached the Administrative Bench of the Supreme Court in 2001 but failed to overturn the recognition.
Then came the 1994 administrative experiment where Ashong was divided into four sub-villages, including Ashong Central. But the arrangement produced an obvious contradiction: Ashong Central encompassed the seat of the second-class Fon.
It was, as one Ashong description memorably puts it, like having two drivers fighting over one steering wheel. And that's probably why the arrangement was suspended in 1997.
Yet, according to the petition subsequently submitted to MINAT, a 2021 prefectural order revived the Ashong Central question and homologated Enongang Reuben Tekwe as its third-class chief. And this time, the consequences were not confined to traditional politics.
Disagreements reportedly surfaced around community development initiatives, sporting activities, road rehabilitation and management of the village water supply. What began as a struggle over traditional legitimacy increasingly threatened to become an obstacle to development itself.
It was against this backdrop that H.R.H. Mbafor III petitioned MINAT, urging the ministry to intervene before the situation descended into confrontation.
MINAT's June 19 response now offers a possible exit to the upholding of the oneness and indivisibility of Ashong. By directing the cancellation of the two prefectural orders, the ministry has potentially removed the administrative foundation of the competing Ashong Central arrangement.
But the most important question now is not simply who wins the chieftaincy dispute. It is what Ashong sons and daughters do with it because they cannot afford to be the most connected generation and yet the most divided: divided by competing claims; divided by brothers; divided by greed; divided by pride; and above all, divided by those who want them to be divided.
Ashong is a community of people, resources, history and enormous potential. Its children need education; its farmers need roads and markets; its youth need opportunities; and its diaspora needs a peaceful home to which it can return and invest.
After decades of looking backwards at the throne, perhaps the time has come to look forward to the village because a throne without development is merely furniture.
The real victory must therefore be bigger than Mbafor or Enongang.
It must be a one and indivisible Ashong, in much the same way like the one and indivisible Cameroon Minister Paul Atanga Nji himself has all along stood and fought for. It must not only be one peaceful traditional order but more importantly, one Ashong that moves forward together and in peace, not in pieces.
