1 in 5 girls globally married before 18, according to estimates by the United Nations Children's Fund(UNICEF).
12 million girls married every year — one every 3 seconds, with 31% in sub-Saharan Africa.
Early marriage increases risks of social isolation, anxiety, and emotional stress.
But there is hope: Cameroon lifted the ban on pregnant girls in school in 2022.
Cameroon is one of 6 countries that ended education bans for pregnant and parenting girls (with CAR, Tanzania, Sao Tome, Sierra Leone, Togo).
Investments in girls' education and legal reforms, helped avert 68 million child marriages globally over 25 years.
However, UNESCO data in 2026 show that "58% of countries guarantee the right to education without discrimination, but only 35% explicitly protect the right to education of pregnant and parenting girls."

Menstrual health sensitization is crucial especially for Girls and Women, but also for Boys and Men.
Amidst the phenomenon of Pad Distribution by Organizations to help low-income Girls and Women manage their periods and Campaigns by Government, Sources say a National Menstrual Health Policy in Cameroon would be a better solution to Period Poverty.
Ruth Tata Fualefac(pictured below) through her Organization, Girls at Heart, has been educating girls and women [as well as men] notably from Cameroon's INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS(IDPs) Communities in the Littoral region on Menstrual Health and Hygiene, in collaboration with their partner, LODGE AN IDP Association.

Cameroon’s maternal mortality rates are declining, yet remain far above global averages.
Each year, hundreds of women die from complications, highlighting persistent gaps in access to quality maternal care, particularly in fragile regions.
It is a sunny Thursday in Nkozoa, a neighbourhood in Yaoundé, where Nan Yonka Alida teaches at a government secondary school. Beneath the calm of the midday heat, she carries a memory she has never been able to forget; the traumatic birth of her first child.
“The birth of my first child was terrifying. I laboured for two days,” she recalls.
She went into labour on a Sunday but because it was her first time, she only went to the hospital on Monday to confirm with the doctor. He told her that dilation had already started, so she rushed back home to prepare her emergency bag.
But what followed was far from normal. From Monday morning to Tuesday, her condition did not improve.
“During the checks, I was still at 8 centimeters and the nurse became worried,” she says.
At that stage, she was already close to full dilation, typically around 10 centimeters for delivery yet labour was not progressing as expected, raising concern among the medical team.
Soon, the situation turned critical. Nan was rushed into the labour room, surrounded by five nurses and two doctors. Her baby was already in distress.
“They tried to stimulate the contractions and even induced labour but it wasn’t working. The baby’s heartbeat began to drop,” she recounts. “In the end, they had to perform an emergency C-section.”
She remembers the pain as unbearable.
“At some point, I thought I was going to die,” she says quietly.
Medical experts say Nan’s experience is not isolated, but reflects the range of complications that can occur during childbirth.
Health experts, community initiatives and policy efforts are working to improve early diagnosis, expand access to care, and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
