The Festival de la Anexión de Nicoya runs July in Nicoya, Guanacaste, and it is one of the most significant cultural events in Costa Rica's calendar.
It commemorates the 1824 decision by the Guanacastecan people to join Costa Rica, a voluntary annexation that is celebrated annually with the traditional horse parade (tope), montaderas (rodeo), Chorotega cultural exhibitions, and a full week of regional festivities. This isn't a manufactured tourist attraction. It's a 200-year-old community celebration that draws tens of thousands of Costa Ricans to the Nicoya corridor every July.
For companies in tourism, hospitality, and travel, this event represents one of the highest-demand travel windows in Guanacaste outside of the dry season peak. Hotels in the Nicoya corridor sell out weeks in advance. Ground transportation demand spikes significantly.
