This is a traditional Japanese timber joint, using precisely cut interlocking pieces and a wooden key or wedge to lock the connection together.
Techniques like kanawa-tsugi were developed to splice structural timbers without relying on metal fasteners, allowing beams and columns to be repaired or extended using wood-on-wood joinery.
The precision is the engineering.
