Νόλαν, συγγνώμη, αλλά… τι φάση;
Ποιος σκέφτηκε ότι αυτή ήταν καλή ιδέα; Και κυρίως, ποιος το είδε ολοκληρωμένο και είπε: «Ναι, αυτό είναι. Ας το κρατήσουμε»;
Muppet Show με μια δόση Gonzo.
Γιατί;
Ο Ματ Ντέιμον έμοιαζε, σε κανέναν άλλον νοήμονα άνθρωπο, για έναν χαρακτήρα πολυμήχανο, πανούργο και καπάτσο;
Ή μόνο σε εμένα η εμφάνισή του δεν ταίριαζε καθόλου με τον Οδυσσέα που έχω στο μυαλό μου;
Και η Αν Χάθαγουεϊ, χωρίς τα Prada της, έγινε ξαφνικά Πηνελόπη;

A Word on The Odyssey…
Those who know me know very well that the virtue that defines me more than any other is justice. So I will try to be fair — although, as is my habit, I will also be rather caustic. And let us not hide behind words: causticity is not necessarily a bad quality. Sometimes it is simply honesty without makeup.
So, let us begin.
In my eyes, Nolan’s The Odyssey looked — and this is where things get difficult — considerably cheaper in terms of production design and sets than several earlier cinematic adaptations. And, I must admit, I did not expect that.
Perhaps Nolan, whom many people first came to know through the controversy surrounding the casting of a Black Helen of Troy, wanted to project his own traumas, beliefs and personal obsessions more than he wanted to bring the work as close as possible to the original.
Let me make one thing clear, though: the choice of Helen did not bother me at all. Truly. I had absolutely no problem with it. In fact, within the universe of the film, it worked with the characters and did not seem out of place to me.
So no, that is not where my problem lies.
My problem is Polyphemus.
Come on, Nolan… put the AI and the bad taste aside for a moment and take a look at Armand Assante. Thirty years ago. Without artificial intelligence, without today's technological wizardry and — most importantly — without needing an entire computer studio to make us understand who the character is.
Polyphemus was not simply a monster.
In Homer’s text, there was a duel of words, intelligence and cunning.
Odysseus was not merely facing a large creature. He was facing an opponent whom he had to outwit.
What we saw here, forgive me, but that was not Polyphemus. It was more like a caricature of a monster that had escaped from Doom 1 on a 1990s PC.
I almost expected the words Level Completed to appear on the screen.
Calypso, I admit, was divine. Literally and metaphorically. However, Nolan, perhaps read a little more about Calypso and what actually happens in The Odyssey. She is not merely a beautiful woman placed in an exotic setting, however convenient that may be from a cinematic point of view.
And then we have those… upright tin cans.
Robots straight out of some 1980s aesthetic, fighting with swords in a merciless battle.
Nolan, I’m sorry, but… what exactly was that?
Who thought this was a good idea? And, more importantly, who saw the finished product and said: “Yes, that’s it. Let’s keep it”?
Scylla, on the other hand, was somewhere between a mythological monster and… the Muppet Show with a touch of Gonzo.
Why?
I have questions.
And I have quite a lot more to say. I could, without exaggeration, give entire lectures on The Odyssey. But I will leave it at this — for now.
Before I reach my own Ithaca and go to sleep, let us talk a little about the cast.
Did Matt Damon look, to anyone else with a functioning brain, like a character who was cunning, resourceful and sly?
Or was I the only one who felt that his appearance simply did not match the Odysseus I have always imagined?
And Anne Hathaway — without her Prada — suddenly became Penelope?
Let me clarify something, so that I am not misunderstood: I am not talking about the performances. The performances were satisfactory. I am talking about the actors’ identification with the characters. About that particular combination that must come together in order for you to forget the actors for a while and be swept away on Odysseus’ journey.
Personally, I was not convinced.
That is all from me.
I love Argos by the way...
And since The Odyssey is, after all, a journey that has received many cinematic interpretations, I will vote — for those who genuinely want to see a version that, in my eyes, wins the battle — for Armand Assante’s portrayal.
