✈️ THE NINE FREEDOMS OF THE AIR

These freedoms define what an airline may do when operating international services:

1️⃣ Overfly a foreign state without landing
2️⃣ Make a technical stop without loading or unloading traffic
3️⃣ Carry traffic from its home state to a foreign state
4️⃣ Carry traffic from a foreign state back to its home state
5️⃣ Carry traffic between two foreign states on a service linked to its home state
6️⃣ Carry traffic between foreign states via its home state
7️⃣ Operate between two foreign states without serving its home state
8️⃣ Carry traffic between two points in a foreign state as part of an international service
9️⃣ Operate entirely within a foreign state

The first two are technical freedoms, while the remaining freedoms concern the carriage of passengers, cargo and mail.

✈️ Did that take-off sound a little unusual? It might be noise abatement in action. 🔇

Pilots follow published departure procedures designed to reduce noise over nearby communities—while always remaining within safe operating limits.

🌡️ Three temperature scales. One essential pilot skill.

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin may describe the same temperature—but pilots need to understand all three. ✈️

Temperature directly affects:
📈 Air density
🛫 Take-off distance
⛰️ Climb performance
❄️ Icing risk
📊 ISA and performance calculations

Key values to remember:
🔹 100°C = 212°F = 373 K — water boils
🔹 25°C = 77°F = 298 K — room temperature
🔹 0°C = 32°F = 273 K — water freezes
🔹 −273°C = −459°F = 0 K — absolute zero

Remember: Kelvin has no degree symbol, and absolute-temperature formulas require Kelvin.

Master the scales before they appear in your ATPL exam. Could you recall all four conversions without checking the graphic? 👇

👀 Can you always trust what you see on final approach?

The slope of a runway can create a dangerous visual illusion:
⬆️ Upsloping runway: You may feel too high and correct by flying lower—increasing the risk of landing short.
⬇️ Downsloping runway: You may feel too low and correct by flying higher—increasing the risk of landing long.

Remember:
UPSLOPE → FEEL HIGH → FLY LOW
DOWNSLOPE → FEEL LOW → FLY HIGH

Anticipate the illusion, maintain a stabilised approach, and use all available visual and instrument guidance. If the approach becomes unstable—go around.

Test your knowledge with Aviationexam and our eTextbook. ✈️

🌬️ Foehn Winds—Fast & Simple

When moist air is forced up a mountain, it cools and condenses, producing clouds and precipitation on the windward side.

After crossing the summit, the now-drier air descends along the lee side. As it sinks, it warms at the dry adiabatic lapse rate—becoming warmer and drier than it was before crossing the mountain.

🔹 Rising air: cooling, clouds and precipitation
🔹 Descending air: warming, clear skies and possible turbulence
🔹 The resulting temperature can be up to 10°C higher

It’s a perfect example of how terrain shapes local weather—and why foehn winds create warm, dry conditions downwind of mountains.

✈️ Stay weather-smart, pilot!

Follow for your daily boost of aviation knowledge.

⚠️ Runway incursions aren’t cinematic. They’re terrifying because danger can develop in seconds.

One incorrect readback. One wrong assumption. Two aircraft on the same runway. ✈️
