With minimal means, Dorothy Iannone develops a visual language of remarkable precision. The figure, shown frontally, emerges as a luminous silhouette against a deep black background; space and perspective are completely suspended. Just as important as the figure itself is the handwritten language inscribed into the image. The sentence ‚Put your mouth right here‘ does not merely describe what is depicted – it becomes an image in its own right, guiding the viewer’s gaze through the composition toward its center. The small ‚Please‘, placed inside a separate mouth, subtly transforms the character of the statement: an imperative becomes an invitation.

When Iannone conceived the drawing in 1976, this unapologetic connection between female pleasure, self-determination, and an iconic visual language was already a provocation. The depicted woman does not appear as the passive object of another’s gaze, but as a figure with agency, articulating and directing her own desire. Almost fifty years later, the work remains strikingly contemporary – not because of its nudity, but because it transforms the pictorial space into a space of encounter. The radical aspect is not its eroticism, but the way Iannone turns the image from an object of the gaze into a speaking presence.

Beyond its explicit subject matter, the work also seems to blur the boundary between representation and object. ‚Put your mouth right here‘ is addressed not only to the body depicted, but almost to the print itself, inviting a kiss that exhibition etiquette strictly forbids. Desire here is directed as much toward the artwork as toward its image.

MARTINA 81 ☀️

Happy birthday to Martina Kügler (1945 Schreiberhau, Silesia – 2017 Frankfurt am Main) who would have turned 81 today!

Already in the 1970s and 1980s, Martina Kügler developed a visual language that addressed female desire with an openness that was extraordinary for its time. Her explicit, often humorous yet tender drawings celebrate sexuality as a natural part of human experience. Kügler is less interested in provocation than in the freedom of the body. Her figures encounter one another without shame; pleasure appears not as an exception, but as a possibility of intimacy, play, and mutual surrender. In retrospect, her work can be understood as a remarkably early contribution to a sex-positive, emancipatory, and q***r visual language. (The latter is discussed by art historian Teresa Jungwirth in her 2024 monograph on Martina Kügler.)

This year, the office isn’t for working.
Basel Social Club takes over the workspace - reconfigured through exhibitions, performances, music, and food.

Departments collapse into exhibitions.
Meetings drift into performances.
Workflows reroute into sound and gathering.

No desks. No deadlines.

We’re pleased to be part of Basel Social Club 2026: The Office

We’re pleased to participate in Basel Social Club 2026: Office, on view June 14–20 in Basel.

This year’s edition occupies a vacant office building near Basel SBB, activating its floors through exhibitions, performances, music, gastronomy, and informal encounters.

Positioning the office as both subject and scenography, Basel Social Club engages with evolving conditions of work, time, and production in the context of digitalization, remote infrastructures, and artificial intelligence.

We look forward to contributing to this site-responsive program and to welcoming you in Basel at Erdbeergraben 1.
