What does this crocodile remind you of? Me it reminds of the scorched earth of Gaza and the Lebanon. Israel is, according to latest media reports, making real steps toward paving the way to transform Palestinian prisons into "Alligator Alcatraz". This means, prisons with Palestinian detainees - a great number of whom are detained with no trial whatsoever - will be surrounded by moats filled with crocodiles from the Nile region. The country's minister for environment has decreed that crocodiles are henceforth allowed to be bred in Israel. As if Israeli prisons weren't horrendous enough already for Palestinians.
The crocodile-story made it into our media today. Tomorrow it will be forgotten.
How can our politicians and our media expect anyone to still have any sort of trust into them and the world order they are creating when they let a country that they embrace as one of their own western-style democracies act with total impunity? Despite the so-called "cease-fire", every single day the displaced women, children and men in Gaza and the Lebanon are dying on account of Israeli aggression. Until today, Israel is preventing building materials to reach Gaza, people still live in tents amongst the rubble - most of them on 40% of what was once the Gaza strip. Noone really knows what Israel is doing on the 60% of the strip that it occupies as foreign media is still excluded and local media has been murdered.
Living conditions for Palestinians in the West Bank are also worsening by the day as Israel is more or less openly preparing annexation.
Our politicians continue to stay silent, most of our media outlets prefer not to talk too much about this.
By not acting, glossing over or even defending the revolting atrocities and dehumanising practices, our politicians and media are paving the way to their own demise and handing the reign to extreme right forces on a silver platter. How come the intellectual ability of our ruling classes - including our media - has sunk so low that they are inflicted by total blindness with regard to the consequences of their doing in the long term?
