Opera Lab Berlin
Experimental Contemporary Opera Theater We aim to premiere new musical theatre works alongside unique versions of pre-existing contemporary repertoire.
Opera Lab Berlin is an independent, free-form ensemble dedicated to creating interdisciplinary music theatre that is tightly bound to its contemporary surroundings. A laboratory for instrumental and vocal performances, the ensemble breaks down traditional musical and theatrical forms: distilling, filtering, boiling, heating, mixing, crystallizing, freezing, melting, and then recombining all possible genres until something new has been found. The cornerstone of our ensemble is equality amongst all artists involved. Opera Lab Berlin is its own producer and curator, a platform for the production and dissemination of new music theatre with cooperative and collective authorship.

We’re going through a phase…
Our upcoming production, It’s Gonna Rain, is built around the music of Steve Reich and comes to Berlin in November 2026. To lead up to the show, our weekly series explores the composer, his works and the ideas that shaped his music.
In this third episode, we focus on It’s Gonna Rain itself. In 1964, Reich recorded the voice of Brother Walter, a preacher speaking about the Flood in San Francisco’s Union Square. Fascinated by the musical quality of his speech, Reich transformed fragments of the recording into tape loops, allowing repetition to intensify both their melody and their meaning.
What began as an experiment with recorded speech became a work of striking psychological intensity: voices multiply, drift apart and, in the second part, dissolve increasingly into noise. Reich later described the piece as expressive of an “extremely dark mood.”

Our upcoming production, It’s Gonna Rain, is built around the music of Steve Reich and comes to Berlin in November 2026. To lead up to the show, our weekly series explores the composer, his works and the ideas that shaped his music.
In this second episode, we look at phasing: a process in which two identical repeating patterns begin together and gradually move out of sync. As the distance between them changes, new rhythms, accents and textures emerge.

In this first episode, we introduce Reich and trace the beginnings of his musical language, based on tape loops, repetition, pulse and processes that unfold gradually before our ears.

Performance Practices (Part IX):
In our interview series with , we continue exploring how musical traditions are shaped through instruments, performance contexts, and embodied listening.
In this episode, focuses on the different types of shamisen and the distinct playing styles, repertoires, and social histories connected to them. From lighter instruments associated with intimate performance settings to larger, more robust forms developed for outdoor and street performance, each variation reflects a different relationship between sound, technique, and audience.
This interview series is produced with the support of the Hauptstadt Kulturfonds.
