The next era of pathology AI will be defined not only by model performance, but by how intelligently AI is integrated into the pathologistโs workflow.
At ECP 2026, Smart In Media will publicly unveil PathoZoomยฎ SmartAssist โ our new AI assistant developed specifically for pathology and embedded into the Image Management System (IMS) of our diagnostic platform PathoZoomยฎ Digital Lab.
Directly from an open case, pathologists can select relevant image regions, combine images from different slides or stains, and ask contextual questions โ without switching applications or interrupting their workflow.
SmartAssist brings image context, pathology knowledge, and conversational AI together where they can create the greatest value: directly within the case. The pathologist remains firmly in control of the diagnosis.
As an open, vendor-neutral IMS, PathoZoomยฎ Digital Lab is designed to integrate scanners and AI applications from multiple providers within one connected environment.
Visit us at ECP 2026 and experience the public premiere of SmartAssist โ a novel, powerful AI-driven addition to our platform, and a further step in our mission to support pathologists by reducing the time and cost of slide reading while improving the consistency and quality of the review process.

Published studies report time savings of 12โ30% through digital pathology, depending on the use case and laboratory workflow. But where exactly does this value come from? And which digital step creates the greatest impact for your organization?
At ECP 2026, we will not only demonstrate technology. At Smart In Media Booth 406, we will explore the business cases behind it:
๐น How smart grossing can strengthen documentation and enable remote expert support ๐น How digital microscopy can accelerate collaboration and second opinions
๐น How an open Image Management System can improve access, case distribution and diagnostic workflows
๐น How scanner-independent architecture protects existing investments
๐น How AI and intelligent workflow tools can help pathologists work more efficiently
Visitors can experience the entire connected workflow, bring their own slides for live scanning on the new Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S540 and receive exclusive previews.
Our team in Stockholm โ Jessica Frohnhรถfer, Jens Mallow, Corina Turner, Manuel Garcรญa Castejรณn, Dr. Detlef Finkler and Dr. Martin Baatz โ looks forward to discussing your current workflow and identifying the right next step for your organization.

From 12โ16 September, the international pathology community will gather in Stockholm for ECP 2026 โ and Smart In Media will be there.
At Booth 406, we will bring the digital pathology workflow to life: from the grossing station to the pathologistโs diagnostic workstation, from the microscope to a fully integrated Image Management System โ and from routine diagnostics to digital education.
Visitors can experience our PathoZoomยฎ and SmartZoomยฎ solutions live, explore different entry points into digital pathology, and see how individual solutions can grow into one connected digital ecosystem.
And this is only the beginning. Over the coming weeks, we will reveal the technology, live demonstrations and experts awaiting you in Stockholm.

From grossing to diagnosis. Digitally connected.
Capture images and videos. Document relevant areas. Assign content to the correct case. Share the grossing view live. View macroscopy and histology together.
PathoZoomยฎ LiveView MACRO connects grossing, documentation and real-time collaboration.
Want to explore how it could fit into your workflow? Contact us for a Digital Grossing Workflow Check.

Captured. But connected?
A macro image only becomes truly valuable when it is reliably assigned to the correct caseโand available when it is needed.
PathoZoomยฎ LiveView MACRO connects image capture, barcode-based case identification, measurements and annotations in one digital workflow.
Integrated with PathoZoomยฎ Digital Lab, macroscopy and histology can be viewed together.
How are macro images managed in your laboratory today?
27/07/2026
Digital pathology. Analog grossing?
High-resolution images and videos can be captured directly at the grossing station and assigned to the correct case.
With PathoZoomยฎ LiveView MACRO, colleagues can also join remotely via live streamโto discuss specimens, provide expert support or guide colleagues in training.
Because a connected digital pathology workflow should not begin at the scanner.
Is your grossing workflow already connected?

Our software engineers and product managers recently came together in Munich for a two-day AI Summit. The goal was simple: to define how we want to use AI in software developmentโone of the most transformative applications of AI today.
Rather than discussing AI in theory, we focused on practical experience. We collected insights from across the team, reflected on our individual experimentation with AI tools, and identified concrete opportunities to:
โข Increase productivity
โข Automate repetitive tasks such as documentation and unit test creation
โข Explore end-to-end agent workflows with humans remaining firmly in control
Over two intensive days, the team evaluated current AI tools, discussed real-world use cases, tested new approaches, and explored what responsible, efficient, and future-oriented AI adoption should look like within our development environment.
We were also inspired by an outstanding keynote presentation from Michael Steil (https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0vTfS80), software engineer, serial entrepreneur, and computer archeologist. Michael shared three distinct approaches to AI-assisted software developmentโunsupervised, test-driven, and interactiveโeach illustrated with practical examples and innovative workflows.
For Smart In Media, it is clear that AI is becoming increasingly important not only in digital pathology itself but also in the design, development, testing, and delivery of medical software.
The AI Summit was an important step in aligning our teams around a shared vision: using AI thoughtfully to build better software, faster, while maintaining the quality, safety, and reliability that medical applications demand.
The outcome of the summit is a set of concrete initiatives that we will now integrate into our development processes over the coming months.

Day 1 at DGP in Augsburg ๐ฌ
A reunion with a long-standing user from Cambodia.
Two pathologists looking for a real microscope.
Special slides.
Live discussion.
Real diagnostic exchange.
Sometimes, the best congress moments show exactly why digital pathology needs to stay close to everyday pathology practice.
That is where our work starts:
scan
stream
discuss
collaborate
Live from the microscope with PathoZoomยฎ Scan & LiveView โ and from there into connected digital workflows with PathoZoomยฎ Digital Lab and SmartZoomยฎ ClassRoom.
See you tomorrow at booth D09.
DMEA has been exactly the kind of energy we love: real interest, strong encounters, smart questions, and deep dives into what pathology needs next.
Together with HUAWEI, we are showing what modern digital pathology can really look like in practice: smart workflows, lean set-ups, image management, AI, structured reporting, and storage built for the future.
Today is the final day, and we are more than ready to give it one last full push.
If you are at DMEA, come and find us in Hall 1.2, Stand A-107.

Next stop: DMEA in Berlin
Anyone who wants to see where digital pathology is really heading should stop by our space at HUAWEIโs booth from Tuesday to Thursday. Our Smart In Media team will show how high-performance diagnostic platforms, IMS, intelligent storage concepts, and surprisingly lean hardware setups come together.
This is where things get concrete: What already works for pathologists in daily practice? What truly takes pressure off lab teams? What is new and relevant from a technology perspective for IT teams enabling digital pathology? And what is next on the roadmap? We will be developments shaping the future of pathology.
That is exactly what we will be focusing on at our stand in Hall 1.2.
Anyone who wants to dive deeper will get a real insight into current solutions, new developments, and the next generation of digital pathology.
If you would like to meet our team with Corina Turner, Ralph Gloser, Omar Tariq, and Martin Weihrauch, please send us a message here or comment โmeetingโ.
