Un Aperitivo in the Greenhouse >> https://www.detail.de/en/215482/un-aperitivo-in-the-greenhouse

Depending on the light, 3,225 cast-glass tiles make the golden ceiling of the L’Aria restaurant on Lake Como sparkle. Herzog & de Meuron have extended the Mandarin Oriental’s restaurant with a new veranda, terraces and a greenhouse. Regional materials, carefully chosen colour accents and an opening towards the landscape shape the subtle transformation.

The DETAIL Modular Construction Congress brings together leading voices in modular architecture — with Sibylle Bornefeld, partner at Sauerbruch Hutton

On 15 October 2026, the timber construction specialist shares her experience from projects such as the Luisenblock, a modular timber office building for the German Bundestag that required an especially short planning and construction period. As part of the project team she also planned the office building for federal authorities at Berlin's Spreebogen — a timber-hybrid building serving as the interim seat of the German Federal President during the renovation of Schloss Bellevue.

What does it take to plan and build a modular timber office building in a particularly short time?

: DETAIL 10.2026: Cultural Buildings >> https://shop.detail.de/de_en/detail-10-26?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=eh10.2026

I Am A Museum!

It’s striking how many new and refurbished exhibition buildings are being realised worldwide – and how difficult it was to narrow the selection for this issue. You won’t find OMA’s New Museum extension in New York or Peter Zumthor’s LACMA in Los Angeles here.

A broader dilemma persists: while museums, theatres, and opera houses rank among the most exciting architectural briefs, even the most established institutions are fighting budget cuts. Culture is an immense social force. Theatre, concerts, dance, art: at their best, all expand consciousness.

This is why Till Briegleb asks how to reach audiences who aren’t yet interested. This summer in Berlin, the Volksbad offered one answer: an open-air pool in front of the Volksbühne theatre that invited everyone to cool off, free of charge – and became a stage for heated debate.

Culture is a mirror every society should look into from time to time.

A Model of Craftsmanship by Dorte Mandrup >> https://www.detail.de/en/215490/a-model-of-craftsmanship

How can new homes and workshops be designed for young apprentices in the skilled trades? Dorte Mandrup’s Crafts College in Herning offers a compelling answer: Beneath a sweeping elliptical roof, communal living, workshops and high-quality, carefully crafted materials come together. The building itself becomes an instrument for learning.

Routine School Construction as a Renovation Project by Mars Architectes >> https://www.detail.de/en/215470/routine-school-construction-as-a-renovation-project

In 1980, Jean Nouvel and Gilbert Lézènès pushed France’s state-mandated industrialised school construction to its limits with Collège Anne Frank in Antony. Four decades later, Mars Architectes have refurbished the deteriorating building, improved its energy performance and restored key elements. A new layer of time continues the serial logic of the original project.

DETAIL Digital Congress 2026
Thursday, 12 November 2026 >> https://www.detail.de/en/digital-congress-2026

Digitalisation is reshaping construction – from AI-supported 2D-to-3D modelling and drone-based assessments to 3D printing, robotics and modular methods. Digital platforms connect stakeholders in real time, and smart homes with AI-based controls boost comfort and sustainability. But it takes more than tech – it needs a shift from isolated drawings to networked data models.

Leading firms from Germany and Europe share their digital solutions at our Digital Congress 2026 – Thu, 12 Nov 2026, 2 PM, Berlin & online.

With Fitore Delija, Störmer Murphy and Partners, Kinzo Architekten, Foster + Partners & MVRDV
