🧾 If your company operates internationally, applies for credit, files taxes, or trades financial instruments, you've probably run into an alphabet soup of identifiers: LEI, ISIN, DUNS, EIN, UEI, GIIN, VAT number, company registration number.

They often show up on the same forms. They sound alike. More than one accountant has mistakenly sent a bank a DUNS number instead of an LEI code. 😅

📉 On 11 October 2027, the EU moves to T+1 settlement. When you buy or sell a security, the cash and the securities change hands one working day after the trade, not two.

⏳ Shorter is better in most ways. Less time between trade and settlement means less counterparty risk. But it also takes away the spare day firms used to fix a mistake before it settled.

🔍 Clean counterparty data was always needed. The difference now is that there's half as much room to catch an error. A wrong identifier or a company name spelled two ways is enough to make a trade fail.

🔗 The LEI is the standard way to keep that data clean across the chain. It ties each trade to the right legal entity, the same way in every system and every country.

🌍 Why would a company need an LEI if its own country does not require one?

🤝 Because the other side of the deal requires it. If you want to trade securities through an EU-regulated broker, for example, the broker needs your LEI to report the trade. Without it, the trade does not go through.

✅ And it is not only the EU. Similar rules apply in the US, India, and Mexico. The good news is that one valid LEI covers all of them at once.

🔑 Your company's LEI code is starting to open doors well beyond the financial world.

In July 2026, GODIN, GLEIF's open data network, gained three new members, including Wikimedia Deutschland, the developer of Wikidata. The network connects business registers, supply chains, and open knowledge bases through a single key: the unique LEI code of each company. 🌍

Why does this matter? 🤖 AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok draw their data from open sources like these. The more deeply the LEI code is embedded, the more reliably artificial intelligence identifies your company correctly.

A valid LEI code is no longer just a reporting requirement. It is your company's digital identity. ✅

Open finance frameworks exist in around 95 jurisdictions. Across borders, their benefits mostly stop, because every country uses its own standards and trust frameworks. 🌍

Project Aperta, a prototype led by the BIS (Bank for International Settlements, the cooperation body for central banks) with GLEIF on board, tested a better way. It connected the open finance networks of the UK, the UAE, Brazil, Hong Kong, and India into one layer, with the LEI as the verified business identity behind KYB and AML checks.

It's still a prototype, not a live service. But the message for businesses is clear: one globally recognised identity beats repeated paperwork.

🤖 AI agents compare offers, fill in forms, complete transactions, and do more on behalf of companies every day. But when something goes wrong, the agent is not liable. The company behind it is.

How do you verify which company is behind an AI agent? Today, the internet has no answer to that. The Linux Foundation plans to launch the Agent Name Service, an open standard for AI agent identity. The LEI is among the supported identifiers. ✅

🇮🇳 India is one of the world's largest financial markets and the LEI code is now fully mandatory there!

The Reserve Bank of India rolled out the requirement in stages between 2017 and 2025. The final phase closed in April 2025, and the obligation now reaches a very wide range of businesses.

📌 Borrowers — any business with total bank exposure above €550,000 cannot get a new loan approved or an existing facility renewed without a valid LEI.
📌 Large payments — all payments above €5.5 million must include the LEI of both parties.
📌 Cross-border transactions — foreign currency transactions above the same threshold require LEI details.
📌 Securities markets — businesses trading stocks and derivatives also need an LEI.

There are no fines — without an LEI, the transaction simply does not go through. 🚫

The same logic applies worldwide: EMIR, MiFID II, ISO 20022, and the US FDTA. India is simply one of the clearest examples of where the global standard is heading. 🌍

🇺🇸 A significant change in U.S. financial regulation.

The FDTA final joint rule established the LEI as the single common legal entity identifier across nine U.S. federal financial agencies, including the SEC, FDIC, CFTC, and the Fed.

Important to know: the joint rule does not change any existing reporting requirements. The actual obligations will take shape in Phase 2, expected around 2028. But the LEI is now written into U.S. law as the single standard.

If your business operates in U.S. markets or works with U.S.-regulated counterparties, this is worth keeping in mind.

The EU is preparing a new digital tool for businesses, the European Business Wallet (EBW). It will eventually let companies prove their identity, sign documents, and deal with authorities digitally, all through one solution. 🇪🇺

The LEI code already plays a key role in this. The good news is you don't have to wait for the EBW. The LEI is already used across several frameworks today, and having one gives your business a head start once the new digital requirements take effect.
