We traced the crafts, architecture, and centuries of exchange embedded in Islamic Cairo, developing them into a conceptual study of a contemporary souq, Darb El Fenoun, through texture, form, style, color, theme, and a list of possible tenants. We then suggested Dar Arafa Architecture to design the space and bring the vision to life.

Two years in the making, the cultural backbone of Citadel Plaza—and Darb El Fenoun, the cultural space at its heart—begins to take shape publicly.

What matters to us most isn’t the announcement. It’s the process behind it: the site walks with curators and collaborators, the references argued over, the long questions about what belongs in a place that sits where Citadel Plaza does, in Cairo.

Placemaking is slow work. It resists the logic of launches and instant visibility. But sometimes the work reaches a moment where it can begin to stand on its own.
